Securing Windows XP

So I have to use Windows XP for some older games. I know that this is no longer supported, and that it is not secure. So my question is, what is the best I can do to secure it? I am running Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3. I will get the latest updates soon (as soon as I get it activated). So what do I do? Also, what is the best antivirus for me? AVG seems to be too heavy, might consider BitDefender Free.

If you are using it only for games and such and if you don't have any fb or such passwords saved in there I wouldn't worry too much

Avast.....MalwareBytes.....ZoneAlarm Firewall ( Prevents your ports from being seen )

Avast tries to sell you their paid product.

Malwarebytes Free is just a scanner, I want real-time protection.

And no 3rd party firewalls. For me they're useless.

Run XP in a VM? that way you can limit its connection to the internet. (or just dont plug Ethernet in)

VM didn't work either. Won't launch.
