Hey guys,

I'm really stumped as to why my Macbook Pro won't boot in the OS. It gets as far as the Apple screen and the progress bar stops at like 30%.

I've left it for over half an hour and it just stays at 30%. I booted it into disk utility and Checked and repaired the disk, but to no avail. I also can boot into safe boot. I downloaded Avira anti-virus but it seemed to not work in safe boot. I'm really confused with it at this stage. If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated :)

Did you shut it down during an update? Also, try booting into your drive by holding the Option key.

Make a Time Machine backup and reinstall OS X.

If you have Mavericks or Yosemite you don't even need to backup, it only reinstalls the OS and doesn't mess with your files

I'm pretty sure I've got the latest updates to yosemite on it. But does it matter that it was originally snow leopard? It's a mid 2010 13" model.

How do I reinstall just the OS?

The only things that will be changed (regardless of what you originally had on your mac) are the following:

/Applications

/Library (Not to be confused with /users/[username]/library which is where your application data would probably be)

/Network

/System

/private

/sbin

/usr (this isn't the folder with your accounts, your stuff is in /Users, this is a unix folder that contains things like the commands for terminal etc)

To reinstall OSX hold CMD+R while you boot and pick reinstall OSX (or similar)

It won't work for some strange reason, It won't verify me. Is there another way? Can I back it up in time machine or something?

What do you mean 'it won't verify' you?
