Anti-Static Strap Question

Go to solution Solved by Godlygamer23,

Ok, so i just had a quick question for when i build my pc. If i plug my power supply into the wall and leave it off, if i put it on carpet will that still take away all of my static electricity or will is that still dangerous to work on a carpet material?

I've built a PC while walking on carpet. Nothing happened. It depends on your area - if you get shocked a lot when touching objects, you'll definitely want to use an anti-static wrist strap. If the power supply is connected to ground, and your antistatic wrist strap is connected to it(and the unit is off), any static electricity will get discharged to the ground prong in the outlet whether or not you're on carpet. That's the whole point of it.

I've never used an antistatic wrist strap ever. I have never destroyed any computer component.

That won't ground you or provide protection

It will if it's connected to the ground.

But he never mentioned that he did that

Unless you have a magical floating table the legs usually touch the ground.

THat won't provide him protection, will it? By "connected to the ground", that means that the thing you're attached to has a grounding plug or something

Its always best to play it safe and i never go anywhere near carpet or any static materials so i always ground to case as its equal charge which is important. Even ground to a metal table u can still shock because ur charge is not equal/same as the PC chassis

I regularly touched the power supply connected to ground.

But, if you're explaining your setup, then you'd surely include that...

Fair point.
