Does upload speed affect download speed when both are in use?

Hi everyone,

I know this is probably a stupid question, but does uploading affect downloading and vice versa? For example, I'm uploading a file, and I'm downloading something at the same time. Would either or affect one another and slow down the speed? Any answer would greatly b appreciated and help me expand my knowledge!

Depending on your bandwidth yes. Think if it like tubes, if the tube is wide enough (high bandwidth) both DL and UL can pass without effecting one another. But if it's to small (low bandwidth) they will slow each other down.

unless your ISP is scamming you, both maximum upload and download speeds can be reached concurrently

ethernet can handle 1gbps and the only thing restricting your internet speed is the ISP, and they restrict upload and download separately

B - 11mbps

G - 54mbps

N - 300mbps

AC - 1300mbps (5ghz) 450mbps (2.4ghz)

Ah so unless my ISP is holding me back, both can work at their full rated speeds simultaneously without any slowdown?

Bandwidth varies based on numerous things such as your router, B/G/N/AC all have their own limits of bandwidth, range, etc. 

with a gigabit modem/router, and a gigabit ethernet cable (which is standard these days) and a gigabit network controller in your PC (also standard on modern computers) the only restriction is the ISP

Ethernet cable connections are full duplex, meaning they allow 2-way communications without interference.
