I will be sending my Z77 Mpower mobo away for warranty, I assume I will get a refurbished board back or a fixed one. So I was going to sell it with my current i5 3570k when the mobo comes back.

What would you pay for a refurbished board and a 2.5 year old I5?

What should I upgrade too or should I wait until the next intel chips to come available? For just gaming an i5 is fine but is hyper threading  going to help a lot with multitasking? I always have a lot of stuff running while gaming but no editing or content creation tasks.

Any Ideas on the arrival of Broadwell chips for desktop? I haven't been keeping in touch with cpu tech as lately.

I'd go locked skylake.

Locked as in non "K"

You're not going to receive a big performance increase going from something like a 3570k to 4690k; they are very similar. Also, while later games will hopefully use more cores as well as hyper-threading better, currently, the difference between HT and non-HT for gaming is minimal.

Your biggest help as far as multi-tasking goes is RAM. 8GB is fine for most ppl, but if you are like some of us here, 50 tabs and 25 programs open...because you hate closing stuff....then id go for 16GB personally.

As for your mobo/CPU...I guess it depends on your patience/needs. I personally think it's better to wait for the higher SKU/K-class processors then getting skylake CPU's when they first come out....but that's more of a personal preference I guess.

The difference in price of i7 and i5 is not the exact cost but almost the cost of another 8GB of ram. The difference between the older i5 and newer ones is becoming more apparent I thought benchmark wise although I could be wrong. We have be told games will use more cores forever a long time and they still aren't but again I feel like I'm already being sucked into the belief that its right around the corner.... And I haven't even started shopping yet.

yep because it'll last you a long long time.

Non K vs K, there is a difference in life span ? Am missing something... Is Skylake not going have unlocked chips ???

Genuinely confused.

Broadwell is next. DERP.

I havn't directly tested it myself...but from what I understand; the difference between CPU's is on the order of like 5% performance increase. Not a worthy upgrade IMO.

Also, you nailed it right on the money(pun intended, sort of)...if your focus is gaming, then I would rather spend the $100 difference between i7 and i5 in RAM/Cooling/SSD/Whatever.

Again, the same reason why I would recommend the i5 - even the latest games that DO see performance increase with HT, it's not a night/day comparison by any means...and as you said...this has been "in the works" for years with very little progress.

So, I can't really say DO THIS, or DO THAT...just give you some options and personal thoughts.

Thanks, that is really all I can expect and all I want to hear. I need to hear it from someone else and make sure I'm not leaving something out.

I hear ya...I think everyone can use a "thumbs up" sometimes. You have good cooling and hardware already...if multi-tasking is your big gripe currently, and not performance issues - then keep what you have, add some RAM, and wait for the K-class processors. You have the cooling and the desire(I'm assuming) to overclock, so no point in getting a locked broadwell IMO.

I dislike Overclocking on the MSI board, no offset and little info that I can find or confirm that tells me there is anyway to reduce voltage at idle, and the best way to go about it is simple but I would actually need time to do it and validate something I have had little interest in. Cooling is there for noise reduction (kinda)

Well, ASUS boards are very easy to use for OC'ing IMO...with simple voltage controls including adaptive mode(which lowers voltage when in idle). other boards have similar features, I only say ASUS board from personal experiences. Also, you will need a new mobo no matter what if you're upgrading your CPU. Either an LGA 1150 for haswell/broadwell, or the upcoming 1151 for skylake/cannonlake. So it depends on your patience/needs. Pick up an H97/Z97 board for broadwell, or wait for skylake for the new architecture. I think you will find the best performance increases waiting for skylake, as it is a new architecture, as opposed to broadwell which is more focused on energy efficiency. As always though, YMMV.

Did you overclock on the the MPower? Then go for a K. If you didn't and don't plan to then go for non-K.

Sucks that we get a new socket, oh well though makes sense.

and yeah skylake will be a jump I bet as this year they have no competition, but skylake has to be good as we know like nothing about zen.
