HDD randomly makes noises

Go to solution Solved by Mighty_Miro_WD,
Hi there @Oberon.Smite!

Hard drive makes three noises:

1. The constant noise of the disc spinning, which is pretty steady.

2. The noise of the heads seeking a new track.

3. If your loading a program, the heads have to switch position rapidly and causes vibrations.

If you have the drives set to power down when not used, it's "normal" to hear regular "spin up" sounds when you access a drive after some inactivity (and this may also occur occasionally when background tasks access the drive).

In your case, it looks like the HDD is fine and you can keep using it, but nonetheless I would suggest to keep an eye on it because of the noise.

Hope this helps.

Cheers! :)

I have an HDD that was salvaged from an old HP. In the original computer it was upside down.

I installed it in my PC a while ago. It made a whining noise so I flipped it upside down. That god rid of the noise, but the green exposed part of the Seagate HDD was like a sore thumb, so today I flipped it back up. It seems to be quiet for HDD standards, but every once in a while it makes a strange WHEEEEEEEE noise. Nothing that sounds like a failing HDD, but just an annoying sound. Do any of you know how to prevent this noise and what may be the cause? Using the tooless mounting system in my case.

It definitely on its last legs. Time to treat yourself to a new one.

Probably it spinning up. HDDs don't spin all the time. When it's not accessed for a while it will stop spinning to conserve power. When it's needed to be accessed again it spins back up.

I know but I use it constantly because all my games are on it.

So is this OCD based? Like, is it a really subtle noise that just bugs you? Or is it quite loud?

I would just recommend just making sure it's installed firmly and with screws. Other than that I'm not sure, don't put important data on it though.

Pretty posititive the HDD health is fine.

Random clicking is a sign of a bad HDD. The original positioning was upside down. It never makes noises when in that position.

Nothing important, just games.

It gets a little bit loud, but only once in a while. Do you think I should flip it back upside down so it doesn't make noise?

I guess kind of loud. Not terrible, but still quite loud.

Well, as far as I'm concerned, HDD orientation doesn't matter anyway, as long as it's level. However, take it with a grain of salt.

So are you saying you think it might be failing or just a noise problem?

Well, no. Failing is definitely a possibility though.

I wouldn't worry too much, Huey.

Ok thank you! I have also determined that the problem is more likely just a small nuisance and not a HW failure. The noise is just the regular spinning noise.

Thanks m8 :D
