How many ports?

I have this one: Click me

And it works great. (5 ports)

My brother has this one: Click me

And it works great (8 ports, I am connected through it too)

As long as you get a 'fast' ethernet switch, you'll be alright with the speeds.

(I got it for cheaper though, look around on some other sites)

First my brother only had a ethernet switch, later I got one too.

Did not notice any speed difference (when doing speed tests) and also not in regular use

i bought the cheapest network switch i could find! as even then the specs it gave me were well beyond anything that was actually achievable in my network!

mine is a plus com 4 port. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Port-Gigabit-Ethernet-Switch-1000/dp/B001DHK1N0

mine is only in my media room. My gaming pc runs off of it as well as my server, skybox, smart tv and anything i want to plug in.

its more than fast enough for the general user.

Gaming PC: • AMD Ryzen 7 3900x • 16gb Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3200mhz • Founders Edition 2080ti • 2x Crucial 1tb nvme ssd • NZXT H1• Logitech G915TKL • Logitech G Pro • Asus ROG XG32VQ • SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless

@Sona please keep in mind that "fast" ethernet is actually a very specific standard.

"Fast Ethernet" means 100 Mbps connection.... Which is quite outdated for home networking. You'll want to make sure to get a Gigabit switch, since they're dirt cheap anyway. Honestly, anything that is:

1. From a reputable manufacturer, such as D-Link, Linksys, Cisco, HP, TP-Link, etc

2. Has the right number of ports you need (Keep in mind, you'll always need +1 extra port to connect the switch to your router - so if you need 6 computers connected, you'll need more than 6 ports)

@Minibois the link you provided is spot on, and exactly the kind of thing he needs, but just be careful with the terminology.

In computer networking, Fast Ethernet is a collective term for a number of Ethernet standards that carry traffic at the nominal rate of 100 Mbit/s (the original Ethernet speed was 10 Mbit/s).

Yeah, I should have clarified you needed an Gigabit ethernet switch.

I also should have stated the thing about how many ports are actually usable.

No worries. We often take that kind of knowledge for granted, and we just assume that a newbie (no offence) will understand.

I personally have a TP-Link Gigabit switch, I believe the 8-port model, but I honestly can't remember. I have had so few problems with it, that I've literally just installed it, connected up my network, and haven't needed to touch it since.
