Couple things:

An FX8 isn't going to work in that motherboard.

The best possible CPU for FM2+ is an 860k, which is not powerful enough to unlock the 970s full potential.

What you should do is return that stupidly overpriced FM2+ motherboard, buy an H81/B85/H97 and pair it with an i3.  Later, when you get more money, upgrade to an i5/i7.

No AMD FM2+ CPU are strong enough to feed a GTX 970 in games unless you play at 4K and 30FPS...you need at least a core i5 for such a GPU.

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |
| GPU: MSI RTX 3080Ti Ventus 3X OC  RAM: 32GB T-Force Delta RGB 3066mhz |
| Displays: Acer Predator XB270HU 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS Gaming monitor | Oculus Quest 3 VR

What i5 would be a good pair with a 970?

i5-4440 + H81 motherboard is a minimum.

If you can, getting an i5-4460 + H97 motherboard would be better.

Do you live near a Microcenter by chance?

fx 8350

if you can't afford an 8350, get an 8320.

and if you can't afford that, get a 6300

Since when do AM3+ CPUs fit in FM2+ motherboards?

Intel i5-4690K @ 3.8GHz || Gigabyte Z97X-SLI || 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws X 1600MHz || Asus GTX 760 2GB @ 1150 / 6400 || 128GB A-Data SX900 + 1TB Toshiba 7200RPM || Corsair RM650 || Fractal 3500W

If you want to overclock go with the i5-4690K (and a Z97 motherboard).

Otherwise I'd go with the Core i5-4590. Bear in mind that among the locked (no 'K') Core i5-4xxx's, the only real difference is a few hundred MHz. The 4590 looks like the best balance between price and clock speed, but any will perform within a few % of one another.
