Opinions on 1000$ USD build

Drown

Hello guys,

I've made this build for a friend, his budget is 1000$ USD max, and it's for gaming only (no video/audio/3D editing/rendering)

CPU: Intel Core i5-4440 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($169.61 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: ASRock H97 Anniversary ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($71.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: Team Elite Plus 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($57.97 @ OutletPC)
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case  ($49.99 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  ($29.99 @ NCIX US)
Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer  ($14.98 @ OutletPC)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit)  ($87.75 @ OutletPC)
Total: $965.15

I'm not sure about the case, it's been a while since I've made any parts list and I don't know which are the "good cheap" cases anymore. My go-to case used to be the Source 210 Elite, but I'm not sure what's the best for this budget.

What improvements would you guys suggest?
Is a 500W PSU enough for this build?

If you can find other ways to save money I'll take it, even though the max budget is 1000$, the lower the better :P

Thanks all for the help!

i would go for an r9 290x, as far as the case goes good budget cases are:

NZXT source 210

NZXT S340

Corsair 230T

Phanteks enthoo pro

Fractal design Arc

if you want to take my adivse and go with the 290x you will need at least a 600w psu

Yes a 500w would be enough however i reccomend that you spring up for a 600w for future upgrades.

Also for the case get the nzxt s340 : http://pcpartpicker.com/part/nzxt-case-cas340wb1
Bit more expensive but can be found on sale at 50$ most of the time.
Edit:Also ditch the cpu cooler. The i5 4460 can't be overclocked which means that the stock intel cooler will suffice.

I'd try and get a bit more than $1000, lose the ODD, and get a 4690k + z97 board (and buy a Hyper 212 when you can afford one). (The only downside to the Source 210 non-elite is that it does NOT have front USB 3.0)

Motherboard: MSI Z97 PC MATE ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($91.98 @ Newegg)

Memory: Team Elite Plus 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($57.97 @ OutletPC)

Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 4GB WINDFORCE 3X Video Card  ($338.99 @ NCIX US)

Case: NZXT Source 210 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($34.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Power Supply: EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  ($39.99 @ NCIX US)

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit)  ($93.99 @ NCIX US)

Total: $1008.89

I wouldn't exactly call $80 cheap, especially when there are dozens of better choices at that price point (and lower).

Thanks for the quick replies guy.

The reason I went for the 970 and not a 290 is that Nvidia GPUs outperform the AMD ones in some games he play, for some reason people with high-end AMD cards always had lower FPS than people with an equivalent Nvidia card.

djdwosk97, thanks for the updated build, I think that's what I'll recommand him. The PSU can always be upgraded later if he decides to get a new GPU or something (it's a PITA to swap it and have to buy a new one, but 99% sure that's not going to happen) and I'd rather stay within budget. If he thinks he'll SLI later on he can always hold back on the SSD for now and get a bigger PSU, or just increase his budget a bit.

btw, you forgot to put the CPU cooler in your suggestion, 4690k needs aftermarket cooler, ecpecially at oc-ing

A bit of an update to djdwosk97's build. It has the SLI capabilities, with reduced costs. I was torn between 1Tb hd + CPU cooler or the SSD, but I settled with the first, as I don't see the SSD as that big of a necessity (you can always add it later, anyway).
