I have just found about 3-D Audio when I received an old Compaq Presario from a friend. This system had integrated "Aureal A3D" hardware accelerated 3-D audio chips. I tested them out with the demos included with the drivers and the effect was really cool. Then I also discovered that classic games such as Half-Life, Unreal Tournament, Counter-Strike and other games from the late 90's to early 2000's supported this "Aureal A3D". I was wondering if there is a way to get this 3-D effect on modern games made today? Would I need to purchase a special sound card?

you just need to use the 5.1 or 7.1 surround audio output from your PC and if the game supports it, you will get surround sound effects

I have a Compaq Presario 7000 from the dawn on the century with a TI200, 512MB of ram, and a Soundblaster sound card thrown in it back in the day

I wonder if it supports this 0.0

Aureal 3D or A3D was regarded as (one of) THE revolutionary virtual 3D technology back in the days. Honestly, I have yet found a virtual 3D that match their effect. It's a good balance of positioning and not going 'overboard' (with too much reverbs and stuffs) I still have the Diamond Monster A3D, but they stopped their driver support at windows 98, nothing beyond that. Too bad they went bankrupt and bought by Creative. Dunno if Creative ditched their technology (to make their own technology supreme), or implement their tech into Creative's own.

I tried the Razer Surround software. All I observe it do is add more bass and reverb. I am looking for something similar to A3D's positional audio, or binaural audio. There must be some way of getting this effect on modern games. Such a technology couldn't have just died, it was really popular and made games sound really good.
