I got a new SSD on it's way very soon, and I was wondering what Windows I should install, 8.1 or 10. The only reason I am really contemplating this is because I got Windows 8 (before Windows 8.1 had come out) and don't want it to be a pain to reinstall Windows 8, then have to deal with the Windows Store and wait half an hour to get 8.1.

Unless anyone knows a way to download 8.1 and then put it my 8 key later. That would be great.

Just to clarify, it's an OEM key.

I don't want to deal with installing 8 and then going through the process of updating and installing 8.1. Is there any way I can go straight to 8.1 then install the updates without going through 8 first?

Will I be able to enter my 8 key? This is only a new SSD, nothing else has changed.

is it for windows 8 or 8.1?

if its for 8 try it, if it doesn't work

use alternative methods to activate it,

No Point in suffering

The key is for 8, but I just found this updated part in an article that says Microsoft changed something (that seemed like they wouldn't change before, lol).

Update! Microsoft Makes it Easier

If you want to just download the installation media for a fresh reinstall of Windows 8.1, there’s a new option from Microsoft that can allow you to download that image without even entering your product key. And if you are completely reinstalling a Windows 8.0 PC you can use this 8.1 installation media with the same key from Windows 8.0, so there’s no reason not to do so. It even comes with Update 1 integrated.

Simply download the Windows Installation Media Creation Tool, and then select the details about which version you want (Windows 8.1 or 8.1 Pro, etc), and then follow through the wizard to create your boot media.

Could this work? That's what it sounds like, and I don't need answers right now because it will still be a couple of days until I get the SSD.

8.1 because W10 is not in stage where u can use it 24/7 all week long.

Put 8.1 on ssd and maybe buy an older 250gb hdd and do doubleboot if u want to play around in W10.
