Depends, really. Personally (and this is what i'm probably going to do in my new rig), I'd go with the SLI 970s. @zappian convinced me on that.

single 980, SLI later. It's always good to go for single solution now and SLI later. Actually saves you money and gives your pc a bigger lifespan.
