I can has internetz?

Go to solution Solved by Shaqo_Wyn,

Asus RT-N66U or if you want something more near the Nighthawk, Asus RT-AC87U.

Recently my old PoS router packed in so I've decided to get a new one, but as with most technology, I am spoiled for choice.

I don't really have any specific requirements, and it doesn't need to be the best of the best, I just need it to be decent.

Here is what I have so far:

  • I typically have around 3-4 devices connected at any given time (laptops, tablet, phone, etc), and plan to add more in the future, so it need to handle multiple connections well.
  • VPN is something I keep getting recommended, but I am not too fussed about it. I have software that can do the same thing if required
  • Not too concerned with ac compatibility as none my devices currently support it, though that could easily change in the future.
  • The range doesn't need to be OTT for this one as my flat is fairly small. Around 10-15m of good connection would do. I have an average download speed of about 70Mb/s and it would be nice to maintain that no matter where I am.
  • USB ports would be nice in case I need to connect something quick or want to turn it into a DIY NAS
  • QoS needs to be good as I am constantly streaming from Youtube and Netflix
  • My budget is fairly flexible right now, but I am looking to spend around £100 at most. Though if a model is outside that range and better value, I'm willing to stretch that.

I have done a little bit of research so far, with Linksys, D-Link and Netgear coming out on top. But of course, I don't have any personal experience with any of them, so I'm gonna leave it to you guys to decide which is best. The Netgear Nighthawk R7000 is one that caught my eye a lot and seems to be very good, though it is slightly out of my budget range, and seems a little overkill for a personal network.

What do you guys recommend as a replacement?

Any and all input is appreciated,

Regards,

LoT

If you can stretch your budget to fit an R7000, it will last you for several years.

Anything from an N66U plus should be good?

Thanks

I think I'm going to go with the AC87U. While it's nearly double my budget, it has a lot of features I can use and will likely last a long time.
