Hey there, basically... My R9 290X is completely fucked and I'm thinking of going with a GTX 980 Superclocked, or a GTX 970, both would be run at stock clocks but will an: AMD FX 8350 Clocked at 4Ghz and 750W Corsair PSU bottle neck it or will they be fine? Simple answers, no other pc recommendations etc. Just a simple answer plox <3

The PSU is much more than enough for even two 980s in SLI.

The fx 8350 may become a problem in more single thread based tasks that require more performance from the CPU, but it should be fine.

Single thread based tasks? Is this like editing or gaming? Sorry I'm not very updated around CPU's and stuff.

The PSU is definitely enough for either card you are looking at.

I do not have your CPU to test if it bottlenecks or not but it looks like tweaktown tested your CPU with a 980 and did notice a huge performance decrease between that and a newer intel chip using a 980 though they do note you do get more out of the GPU with a newer CPU.

Gaming is more single threaded dependant, yes.

Editing I'd say is a bit of both.

-Don't get a 980. They're overpriced as hell. If your 290x broke right now I'd tell you to buy another one ^^ or better yet, wait for the R9 300 series.

With that out of the way, yes, the 8350 will bottleneck these gpus a bit. It can be very little or a lot depending on the game. If you're buying a new system i recommend an i5 4690k. If you already have the 8350 keep it for now.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

I don't particularly want to buy another 290X though, a lot of games I enjoy playing are more optimized around Nvidia cores.

Really any newer i5 would be fine, though that would also require swapping motherboards, and that typically would need your os to be reinstalled, or at least reactivated.

Then get a 970, just avoid the 980 as much as possible :)

I'd say unless you are planning on trying to go to 4k the 970 should work well. There are a few poorly optimized console ports that might exceed its abilities in 1080 or 1440p but you should be fine for everything else. The 980 is a flagship GPU. If you do not mind paying a lot more for a little extra performance then it is a fine choice. If you are focusing on performance per dollar then you'd probably be best staying with your current CPU and replacing your GPU with another AMD GPU.

Not when you could get a lot more performance with less money. AKA R9 290x in crossfire.

No HDMI 2 only 1 display port........if you want 1 monitor then maybe. I do not really understand why you hate the 980 so much. I agree it is an expensive card but there are positives and negatives to everything out there. For some people the 980 is the card to get. For others the 970 or 290X. I find it odd that someone is so opposed to a product but to each their own.

Edit: Correction, I forgot about that hub the 290X comes with. I have no idea if it works as intended but the HDMI 2 statement stands.

I don't "hate" an inanimate object. HDMI 2 is pretty much redundant with displayport... and you won't be running anything that requires more than one DP cable with a 980, I can tell you that much. There are some positives, but the moment you could get a LOT (and I mean a lot) more performance and spend less money, that's when a computer part stops making any sense. In a year a 980 will be just as obsolete as a single 290x, so paying so much more will not have given you a tangible improvement. You'll have to upgrade just as soon. 290xs in crossfire of course are not futureproof either, but they will give you better performance now (by a large margin) and save you some money that you'll be able to spend on an upgrade. And maybe you'll be able to wait a little longer before upgrading. For the 980 the value is just not there. Maybe once AMD makes its move it will drop to a price I find reasonable. For now, I won't recommend it to ANYONE and tell people to save their money.

I think I'm going to go with a 970, then at a later point update my CPU and Mobo then get a second 970 or a new higher end card :)
