Best Core i5 ?

Go to solution Solved by That Norwegian Guy,

so i should go for 1.25v and 4.2ghz ? btw i will have a Noctua NH-D14 if that makes a diffrence ?

I meant you should go for the highest possible frequency you can get at 1.25v.

4.2 was just an example of the minimum you'd expect (if it was a really bad chip)

I get 4.7Ghz out of mine at 1.25v, (insane chip) and bumping it up to 1.28v got me 4.8Ghz stable, so that's what I run.

That air cooler will handle it no problem.

So im looking to upgrade my IntelPentium G2130 (3M Cache, 3.20 GHz) to a Core i5 , which has the best bang for the buck in around 250 $ , with hyper threading ofc :D and should i OC it on mine ECS Z77H2-A2X Deluxe Motherboard ?

I haven't lost my mind -- it's backed up on a HDD!

i5 4690k is the best one at the moment, although on a z77 it would be 3570k.

so a 3570k it is then , but is it good for gaming ?

The optimal choice on the platform in question.

Just don't overclock too hard on that motherboard. 4.2 Ghz should be well within range. Or rather, aim for as much as you can get from a maximum of 1.25 volts on that board.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

i5 does not have hyperthreading, it has 4 cores and 4 threads. And the best i5 is an unlocked i5 (K at the end). Get the highest clocked one you can get at your countries store for 250$. :D

i5 CPUs can have HT. Just the ones you see mentioned on the forums a lot don't.

Some of the mobile ones have HT as a feature if I'm not mistaken.

They do, but just the mobile ones and some older U versions..that have 2 cores 4 threads. They are basically i3s with Turbo Boost enabled.

I3 has hyperthreading, I5 does not.

Unless you actually need the hyperthreading, any I5 will suffice for gaming. Any I3 probably would too except in certain situations.

I've been wondering why the I3's don't have turbo boost. Kinda sucks.

So that it's performance doesn't come close to the i5 and they can make their money off different product lines. Bit like what they do with some of the i5 already: take some binned i7 chips and disable the HT.

How do they disable the HT? Any way to re-enable it or is it disabled at the physical level?

Physical thing I believe. Locked at a hardware level.

Damn....

Some internet genius needs to come up with a workaround....probably not physically possible from home. Guessing it takes hell-a expensive equipment to alter things on that scale.

I had the almost exact same pentium G. Going to the 3570k is a great upgrade, go for it.

If you have a steady enough hand to solder at a microscopic level then go ahead  :P
