Hey Guys,

 

I have (had) my Core i5-2500K OC'ed modestly to 3.8GHz at 1.12v (currently testing at 4.0GHz at 1.13v) and my question is how do I lower the voltage when idle. The frequency drops to 1.6GHz when idle but the voltage remains at 1.12v according to CPU-Z.

 

Have I missed something, is there a setting I should have changed but haven't?

Are you able to check the voltage in the UEFI BIOS? CPU-Z Could be incorrect...

It reads 1.12v in there as well but the Vcore is the only one I've have changed, I've left the other settings (can't remember what they are) on auto. Over the two months I've been running it has been perfect both stability and temperatures.

did you change the voltage to manual ? If its on offset it drops or raises the voltage depending on usage

I think you may want to disable Intel SpeedStep (can be abbreviated as EIST) in the BIOS for now so that your CPU doesn't underclock when idle then when you are done turn it back on.

 

I have no knowledge about overclocking so take all I say with a grain of salt.

If you put a manual voltage then it stays like that permanently. There are two options one is to set the voltage to offset so that it drops when the processor is not under heavy usage. The other option is to set the frequency to be permanently at its overclocked state by disabling SpeedStep. I do prefer the second option as I always have immediate access to all of the power of the CPU, not that a millisecond matters that much, but there is just something to it that I like more.

I am using manual voltage and I want to leave EIST enabled because if the CPU isn't doing anything then I want it to clock itself down
