So I need to write and remember a 3.5 to 4 minute speech on any topic. I was thinking of doing something on technology, but I don't want to make it boring. Do you guys have any idea?

Possibly on ISPs and broadband speeds? There's a lot going on in that field right now, so you should have plenty to talk about.

Would that be somewhat controversial? There would be a lot of great stuff to talk about (US vs everywhere else, monopolies, ext)

Talk about how NVIDIA lied about the 970's VRAM.

You could make it controversial by talking about some of the UK's recent filters regarding the internet (porn filters, so maybe not a good thing to talk about if it's for school). Or you could talk more about the general censorship and snooping fetish that governments are developing (like how David Cameron wants to get rid of encryption the government can't get past)

You could include the fact that TWC has a 97% margin on their broadband services, but still haven't rolled out wide are fibre/fast connections. US vs South Korea is a good topic too, same with Hong Kong rolling out 10Gb/s (or close to) and people in places like the US and UK are lucky to get more than around 25Mb/s.

make real world examples of what you are talking about and include people from the room in them. also the more absurde the example the funnier therefore not boring for the listener.

"You know it'll clock down as soon as it hits 40°C, right?" - "Yeah ... but it doesnt hit 40°C ... ever  😄"

These are some points I created:

My internet situation (cable ends quarter mile away)

Net Neutrality (Internet highway with equal speeds)

Large corporations (Doesn’t seem to care about customers, only money)

Profit margins (Huge profit)

Lack of speed (Compared to other contries)

Multimedia demands high speeds (Large file sizes, 4k streaming)

Possibilities for expansion (fiber)

how linux is the future of gaming, you may copy gaben's speech from gdc 2013

I don't think random people would be interested in gaming or operating systems unfortunately.

Seems like good points. You can include the stuff about the recent FCC rulings for broadband speeds, along with the possibility of classing internet as title 2, making it like gas and electricity and what impacts it would have (such as giving the FCC greater control over ISPs) not only for the US, but how it would likely effect the internet situations in other countries.

are you able to do silly things? equating the ISP companies territories and in deals between eachother and control of territory reads very much like how gangster families interact with eachother AKA the godfather movies. if anything its a good excuse to come to school dressed in a suit for all the girls. (or boys if that's your thing)

also my secret weapon for speeches are props. each tied to certain segments of the speech and arranged in chronological order I derive some comfort in having my speech laid out in front of me in abstract form with props. if no props allowed I bring different pens to substitute... never been told pens were not allowed

As long as its not conterversal or offending, I can really talk about anything. Just can't mention specific companies, people, or anything specific really.

General tip for speeches:

Practice your speech a lot and then make cue cards with just a few words on each. There is nothing worse than listening to someone just read a text that's being protected on the wall.

If you are reading full sentences out loud then you are doing it wrong.

Here is an example of cue cards but I would recommend only having the bold parts on it, and try to memorize the rest. It's actually good if you don't remember it word for word because it gives a much more natural flow in the speech if you just remember the bullet points and then improvise a bit to string them together.

I believe we can use a notecard, so main points with a few bullets would be a good idea.

Good, use them.

Makes the speech have a much nicer flow to it which in turn makes it more interesting. It also looks more professional which the teacher likes ;).

You have to practice the speech a lot more than if you were to just read it line by line though.

It shouldn't be too bothersome to do if you are writing about something you enjoy.
