970 or r9 290x

Ordering upgrades of my PC tomorrow. Still conflicted on which GPU I want. I am really only going to do 1080p gaming. Help!!

only 1080p 970 still a good card on MOST GAMES, some may have issues. if you really want 0.5 gb ram then go for290x.

the 290x is better and cheaper, but if you care about power efficiency and low heat output, go for the 970

 

if you play with modded games, (im looking at you skyrim HD textures) the 290x wins because of more memory and wider memory bus

970 if you don't plan on SLI and/or higher resolutions. 290x if you plan to crossfire and/or go higher resolutions or want to save some money at the cost of extra heat and power consumption.

That "saving money" is such a bad argument. It is literally a few cents a month. But I may go to 1440p in the future. I'm thinking about getting a r9 290x and a 1440p monitor.

I meant save money because the 290x is generally cheaper than the 970

Right, for 1080p i would say the 970 but in a few years when Vram becomes more of an issue your card will stutter cause of the 0.5gb of slow as shit VRam, if u ever plan on going 1440p go with the 290x its more future proof and IMO better especially if you play games like bf4 which runs with mantle

It depends on where you live as to which is cheaper. In the UK the 290X is still more expensive. And the 290X doesn't have more memory, they both have 4GB.

 

Screw HD textures, I run Skyrim at 4K with 4K textures and it uses about 3.4GB vram. Occasionally it goes up to 3.6, and when it does... absolutely nothing out of the ordinary happens. I know. Astounding. By the way the AMD fanboys go on about it you'd think the world should open up and Gaben should rise up with his candy-cane sceptre and a massive frown. But no, it's just Skyrim as normal.

yea, get the r9 290x lightning by MSI, its the most beast of all 290x cards, its like say a 980 KingPin edition, its the beastest of them all, and its only 300$

 

ok Newegg is out of the lighning but the one with the TWIN FROZR cooler is 300$, the lighning is more expensive
