Raid confusion . Help Plz

Go to solution Solved by Altecice,

No its not possible and not best practice to RAID 1 drives that are two sizes as your RAID array will conform to the smallest volume (so in your case you could end up with 1Tb+1Tb = 2Tb) and the last Tb of your 2Tb HDD wouldn't be used in the array.

Hi mates

i have 2 HDDs on is 1Tb and the other is 2TB . Raid 1 is possible on them or not if it is possible then if i store my date on 2TB drive then 1TB will contain the first 1TB and the next files after that will not be saved or its not possible on different size of valumes ?

both drives are Seagate as shown in Sig.

Thanks brother :) can i use the remaining 1 tb as out of arry storage?

sadly no. If you wanted to go down the route of 100% use then you could RAID0 that would give you extra read/write at the cost of double the failure rate (if one of the drives fail they both fail). But I personally run an SSD RAID0 array and im fine with that :P

bro as much as i know about Raid . Raid0 is not a saver but a suidice attack on your data . if things go right you are done dancing but if something goes wrong you'll die empty handed and no virigins will be granted but a kick on ass a hard bone breaking kick !. sorry for my terms i've used but coz if militray background and service in Iraq and Afghanistan this is the best example i have now .lol

Yes this is correct but RAID0 you trade off the security for extra speed (it would never be used in server situations for example) If you really need the extra security then stick with RAID1 but you will be stuck with 2Tb usable.

i think i have to go for plan B the external back up hard drive . :D

Hey OCing Noob,

It is possible and should work, but first you need to format both drives and thus lose all data on them, and after that you would be able to use only 1TB from the larger drive. In their nature, conventional RAID setups force all drives in the array to be limited to the size of the smallest drove and work with the speeds of the slowest one. Thus your 2TB drive will be limited to 1TB and the other part would be unusable.

I would suggest configuring a continuous backup of your more important files and folder from the 2TB to the 1TB drive without setting them up in RAID.

Moreover, it is not recommended to use non-NAS/RAID class drives in RAID arrays due to the increased risk of data corruption and drive drop-offs from the array.
