try f.lux

disable it when you're going to use VLC. has a disable for 1 hour feature and works really well.

Well I just listen to music all day and don't want my eyes to burn at night with bright white pages which is the reason I use f.lux

works perfectly for me.

Everyone has a  different preference.

Dimmer might just work better for you.
