I am looking into a cheap CPU for a friend and was wondering how the FX 6300 holds up in games. He already bought the motherboard. Cheers guys :D

Ehh... Does he already have a Mobo? If not, you are probably better of going for the Intel side.

The FX 6300 is not.. Amazing

Yes there is a motherboard. What would you suggest he get instead?

FX is getting old and not a great investment.

If he does not have the motherboard already then go for the Intel Core i3 or i5.

Like, has he bought it already?

Either way, an i3 or i5 + LGA 1150 motherboard would be better

I'd say for AM3+ the FX 8350 is a better option, even though it's a tiny improvement over the FX 6300 in most games.

Ok should I tell him to get that instead?

Unless he can return the motherboard, yes!

Don't get me wrong AM3+ is good, it's just outdated!

I could ask him to return it. He doesn't know much about PC building so he bought it blind

What motherboard is it? If he bought it blindly something tells me it's a cheap 4+1 motherboard that cannot safely handle an 8350.

ASRock 990FX Extreme3

Only 4+1 :\

Such a shame they're selling that motherboard for that price ($95). I'd highly recommend he returns it because he may have throttling issues with an 83xx.

Minimum recommended is 6+2 and 8+2 for overclocking.
