Hi there everyone,

I was wondering... Who makes the best HDDs? Seagate or Western Digital? Personally, I am leaning towards the Seagate because I heard a lot of good reviews about the Momentus and Barracuda line, whereas i hear a lot of crap about Western Digital. I actually had a WD Scorpio Blue that had crapped out after a few months. But personally i am asking ur advice so i can choose the right brand for my new gaming build.

WD black series are the best hard drives IMO, and I had a 1TB Seagate Barracuda that crapped out on me along with a bunch of seagate 2.5" laptop hard drives that died, replaced the laptops hard drive with a WD drive, hasn't failed in over 3 years.

Reliability-wise, both are good. You may see more complaints on the seagate barracuda line but remember that those who complain speak louder than those who are satisfied and don't say anything.

If you're looking for mass storage, it's hard to beat the seagate barracuda's 3TB model.

For overall usage, the 1TB WD caviar blue and seagate barracuda are neck to neck in price. WD usually comes with some good disk software while the barracuda is slightly faster.

If you want a quiet drive, the WD Red 3TB has a thick enclosure that's nearly silent even when up close.

For premium performance, it's hard to beat the WD Black. It has better speeds than the majority of 7200 rpm drives.

If you need a Hybrid drive, WD doesn't offer anything against the Seagate momentus xt.

I generally get seagate barracudas because their speeds are ever so slightly better than WD's hdd of the similar price point--the WD blue. The barracuda is also a few bucks cheaper sometimes.

In the end, it depends on what you want.

What on Earth are you doing? Anyway, to answer your question, get the cheaper one, if you're looking for a generic 7200 RPM drive. They're pretty much the same.

Desktop: Intel Core i7-5820K, Corsair H115i, Asus X99-Deluxe/USB 3.1, G.Skill Ripjaws4 32GB 2800MHz CL16, Zotac RTX 3070, Samsung 950 Pro 512GB in Angelbird Wings PX1, Samsung 850 EVO 1TB, 5*Seagate 12TB, Cooler Master V1200, Phanteks Enthoo Luxe, Windows 10 Pro. Phillips 328P6VUBREB, Corsair Vengeance K95 RGB Cherry MX Brown, Logitech G502 X Plus, Sennheiser HD700.

AYANEO 2S: AMD 7800U, 32GB 7500MHz, 2TB WD SN850X. Windows 11.

As far as I know, reliability is about the same unless you're trying to build a cheap-ass NAS, where you cannot afford WD Reds, get Barracudas. WDs sometimes make a hissy fit in raid. I have 2 Barracuda 1TB 7200.14 in RAID 1 in my NAS and they are lower profile devices which help them run cooler, though my cheap NAS doesn't make them slog much as it can only push about 30MB/s.

For speed the WD Black is the fastest 7200RPM drive out there.

They are both good, no one is better than the other but I lean towards WD for no real reason. However I use a Seagate in my main PC.

They are similar enough that I am going with WD in my next build specifically because the WD Reds have red labels and I have a plan to make them look nice in a carbide air 540. Seriously, this is what it's come to. I'm picking hard drives based on the color of the label

  • 2 weeks later...

Both companies have been around forever and they both make good products or they would be out of business by now.  It really does come right down to what you are looking for in a drive.  I like seagate personally but I don't know why.  I'm thinking of getting a couple of those 4TB blacks though.  Those look sweet.

Laws only govern the honest.

Like everyone else is saying, both of them are good and reliable, just pick with whatever brand you prefer.

But if you want performance you go WD Black.
