Hi, I'm planning to get a HD 598 for listening to music, and I am currently questioning its usefulness in gaming.

CS:GO is the game I will be using primarily with these headphones.

I'm a bit tempted to buy a gaming headset instead because it has a 7.1 virtual surround functionality. One thing I noticed, however, is that the 7.1 headphones I looked at comes with a USB 7.1 sound card of some sort. So I wondered whether virtual 7.1 was a sound card functionality rather than a headphone functionality.

Can someone explain to whether 7.1 is a headphone functionality and requires a compatible 7.1 headphone along with a 7.1 sound card?

Will I be able to run 7.1 with a sound card that supports it + HD 598?

to me virtual surround or what gaming headset companies tote as 7.1 sounds just like adding reverb. to recreate this effect take 2 cups and partially place them over your ears. the room you are in sounds different but does it help place objects in 3d soundspace around you? nope not to me. not to many of the trusted names on the audio subforum

Do you think that buying a HD 598 is better than buying a gaming headset?

Also do you have any opinions on HD 598s?

Yes, but the 558 is nearly the same headphone (arguably exactly the same as 558 with foam mod) and the 518 is also similar with slightly more bass. I'd probably vote AKG K612 for competitive games like CS:GO, however.

You can still get an AKG K7xx for $200 so I would recommend that if you can wait for it to come and have the $200 to spend. It is quite a bargain for what you're getting imo.
