Welp...

I am in bit of a pickle... Currently I am switching to intel just because of the features they offer and the better performance. After watching Linus'so video on how benchmarking is done in a clean process environment, I am not really sure if I want the 4790k. That is because I have SOO much crap in the background it's not even funny...

So which one is better -

I7 4790k with Maximus vii formula

I7 5820k with rampage v extreme and 16gigs of ddr4

For gaming at 1080p and possibly 1440p Zion future

Lets all ripperoni in pepperoni

the 5820k is more powerful

This is my opinion, it doesn't mean I'm right and is liable to change at any time. I may offend of which I apologize in advance.

you need ddr4 for the 5820k I believe

Yes you need DDR4 so the DDR3 RAM will be wasted.

X99 is likely overkill for you.

I have the 5820k and i've never been anywhere close to maxing it out. (except when compressing files but that doesn't count)

for pure gaming X99 is simply a waste of money.

Then, if you also stream a lot and do video conversion it's the best choice.

I7 3770k - MSI Z77A-GD 65 - DeepCool GamerStorm Assassin - MSI GTX1080Ti Gaming - 4x4GB G.Skill Ares 1600MHZ CL8 - WD 1TB Caviar Blue -

Totaly agree,

If you do allot of video editing and rendering, or any other kind of productivity stuff.

Then a 5820k would be a better choice.

But i havent seen topic starter say that he was doing those kind of tasks.

Unless i missed something lol :D

If you're just gaming, X99 is not for you.

Even if you're running a bunch in the background with things like DX12 coming strong CPUs are going to be much less relevant for gaming. Even today we already see this.

CPU: 5820k 4.5Ghz 1.28v, RAM: 16GB Crucial 2400mhz, Motherboard: Evga X99 Micro, Graphics Card: GTX 780, Water Cooling: EK Acetal CPU/GPU blocks,

240mm Magicool slim rad, 280mm Alphacool rad, D5 Vario pump, 1/4 ID 3/4 OD tubing, Noctua Redux 140/120mm fans. PSU: Evga 750w G2 SSD: Samsung 850 Pro 256GB & Seagate SSHD 2TB Audio: Sennheiser HD558s, JBL! speakers, Fiio E10k DAC/Amp Monitor: Xstar DP2710LED @ 96hz (Korean Monitor) Case: Fractal Node 804

The 4790k will perform better in games due to the higher clock speed. Also the MBs are a waste of money but if you like/want them go for it.

Really?

So my FX @ 4.7 ghz is better then a stock 4790k?

Dont get the 5820k unless you edit high res videos like the staff of linus media group all day.

Eh but I just cant resist. Also since dx12 and a better cpu which is newer with a upgrade path to a 5960x...

I want it to be future proof. Cause every month I can only add $300 to my pc and I have been saving for 6 months....

There is no such thing as a "future proof" pc.

Also when DX12 comes out dont think every game will use 6 threads or more.

Lazy devs will be lazy.

I am a programmer and i can cram as much as i can in a  single thread i will.

Its easier.

Lmao what? Trolling? That is a different architecture.

The 4790k and 5820k are the same haswell architecture. So yes the higher clocked 4790k will perform better because of the higher clock speed in games. Games prefer per core performance over more cores thought this has been established already.

No 4790k is Hashwell. 5820k is Hashwell-E

I have a core i7 2600 and I can tell you; you won't even notice you're multitasking anymore. Even with file compression or video conversion in the background your interactive tasks will be snappy as ever (although I don't recommend gaming while compressing files...). X99 would make sense if you were into virtualization a lot, but for pretty much everything else the 4790k should be plenty.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Oh i'm sorry the E makes it totally different. lol Again they are the same architecture. Even a 4690k beats the 5820 in per core performance.

They're not clocked the same genius
