Hello

I'm building a workstation computer, it will not be used for gaming, but for music production.

I have very little knowledge about computers, so I'm asking you guys here if you could possibly help me build a functional and stable computer.

I working a lot inside Cubase and have big orchestral templates that draw very big chunks of ram.

That's why I want to have 128GB of RAM.

Cpu speed is also quite important to run plugins, but RAM is the most important for me.

Here is a list over parts I picked out:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/JQrTD3

Cpu: Intel Xeon E5-1650 V3 3.5GHz 6-Core OEM/Tray Processor

Cpu cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock 3 113.8 CFM Fluid Dynamic Bearing CPU Cooler

Motherboard: ASRock X99 Extreme4 ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard

Memory: 2x Crucial 64GB (4 x 16GB) Registered DDR4-2133 Memory

Storage; 2x Samsung 850 Pro Series 1TB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Video card: Asus GeForce GTX 660 2GB Video Card

Case: Corsair 300R ATX Mid Tower Case

Power supply: be quiet! Dark Power Pro 10 850W 80+ Platinum Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply

OS: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit (OEM) (64-bit)

The case and video card I already have, but since I don't play video games I don't mind having a bit outdated grapichs card.

But everything is up for switching out if it is necessary.

I've asked around a bit, but there are very mixed responses when it comes to having this much RAM on one computer. Some say you should have 2 computer, master and slave. Other say 128GB ram on one computer is going to be very unstable.

There are some who have this amount or ram and it's working fine.

This is quite confusing, and I need some input from people who know this stuff very well.

Do you think this build would work?

What would you done differently?

Thank you! :)

I don't even use 128gb on my studio PC. You won't use it unless you're loading in more than 150 tracks into Protools with Ableton, Reason, and then some in the background.

That is gonna be overkill for music production unless it needs to be rigged to several boards and many effects loops, both sending and receiving, manual per track. Trust me, I do this for a living :P

The projects never end in my line of work.

CPU: Dual Xeon E5-2650v2 || GPU: Dual Quadro K5000 || Motherboard: Asus Z9PE-D8 || RAM: 64GB Corsair Vengeance || Monitors: Dual LG 34UM95, NEC MultiSync EA244UHD || Storage: Dual Samsung 850 Pro 256GB in Raid 0, 6x WD Re 4TB in Raid 1 || Sound: Xonar Essense STX (Mainly for Troubleshooting and listening test) || PSU: Corsair Ax1500i

CPU: Core i7 5820k @ 4.7GHz || GPU: Dual Titan X || Motherboard: Asus X99 Deluxe || RAM: 32GB Crucial Ballistix Sport || Monitors: MX299Q, 29UB65, LG 34UM95 || Storage: Dual Samsung 850 EVO 1 TB in Raid 0, Samsung 850 EVO 250GB, 2TB Toshiba scratch disk, 3TB Seagate Barracuda || PSU: EVGA 1000w PS Platinum

Yes :)

Trust me... unless you have a contract to do it, you don't need ECC, and for personal use not NEARLY that much.

Yes :)

its music production dude, not 4K video editing. You could easily get away with a 4790K and 32GB of RAM. I don't know how big your templates are but 128GB is very hard to fill up with audio files.

Well, it's the entire orchestra (large modern) + hybrid stuff and sometimes synths.

I currently have a little over 1700GB of sample libraries, and want many of them ready to go when I work.

I just don't want to compromise when it comes to what kind of sound and size I want to write for.

But I understand that you are a professional and take your word for it :)

Some of the strings take over a gig per patch and almost always I layer diffrent libraries on top of eachother to create more realism and character.

Trust me here. You won't need that much for orchestras either. Audio is audio, what it is is irrelevent. The audio resolution and bitrate is what controls size. But those applications are very intelligent at loading and dumping from ram when needed. Promise :D

We have somewhere around 200TB of samples, all remote.

The projects never end in my line of work.

Wow, 200TB of sample libraries! :D

Do you work at remote control maybe?

I work at one of the big 3 labels, suffice it to say that.

Thank you so much for your input, I guess I will have to reconsider what to build :)

Have a nice day!

I'll leave this here for you. Wrote this a few minutes ago. http://linustechtips.com/main/blog/338/entry-493-1-what-does-a-daw-really-need/

This is my experience. You will see some people argue about it, but this is my experience with the systems.

The projects never end in my line of work.
