Your VS550 will be fine. You could probably even get away with a 280X/290.

So, as the 960 isn't as cost effective as I was hoping, I've been looking into a GPU from the Red team. I've found a local store selling an r9 285 from sapphire for a decent price, but I realised something that may be an issue, if my corsair vs550 would be good enough to power the 285 or if I'll need an upgrade of some sort?

Normandy - Intel Core i5 3470, 8 GB Corsair Vengenace LP, EVGA GTX 960 SSC, Gigabyte GA-Z77M-D3H-MVP, WD Blue 1 TB, Seagate 320 GB (steam), Seagate 320 GB (experimental, second OS, etc), Windows 8.1 + Ubuntu 14.10

You're fine with 550W, may want to upgrade if you want to do Crossfire.
