Looking for 27" 120Hz+ TN panel for gaming

MammothJerk

Building my new computer at the moment and i thought about getting a new monitor while im at it.

right now im using a 27" BenQ GW2750HM which is not very ideal for gaming.

I've been looking at the BenQ XL2720T 120Hz and the Asus VG278HE 144Hz

The BenQ monitor is 11% cheaper so i'm wondering wether the 24Hz difference is worth the 11% price difference.

Feel free to suggest me other monitors if they are better then these two

My relevant computer specs will be 4770k, 32gb 1866mhz RAM, gtx 780 SLI

(why is there no 2560x1440 tn panels?)

In reality you would never tell the difference between the 120 and the 144 so the 11% price difference makes the choice In my opinion. Most people can't tell the difference between 60 and 120.

I've had my eye on the BenQ XL2720T for some time now but I currently own an older Asus VG236H which is 120hz. I cannot vouch for any of the newer 120hz+ monitors unfortunately. I would search for some reviews and see any video reviews on YouTube if available to help make your purchase.

1080 on 27" - will look terrible

TN - will look terrible

120hz - mostly pointless

Get a 2560x1440 IPS monitor like a Dell U2713HM. I use mine for gaming all the time.

I was hoping 1080p wouldn't look too bad on a 27". I agree with TN but I somewhat disagree with 120hz. I use one myself and there is quite an improvement however I've been debating going to 1440p ips for my main monitor now.

Even 1080 on a 24" display looks crap to me, and I hate using TN after having an IPS screen on my Monitor and laptop. My opinion is that the benefits of 1440 and IPS far outweigh the 120hz feature.

I was considering this as well. Laptops have IPS panels now? Which model do you have? MY 120hz monitor is quite old and I really like 1440p resolution so I may switch my main to another Dell IPS.

Thinkpad X220. IPS on laptops is still very rare though, there's only a couple of models with it as an option.

Ah yes a thinkpad. My first one was a x120e (lol netbook, but Arch Linux ran great on it) and it was pretty sturdy and I did enjoy it. I do not like laptops anymore so I do not think I will get one. However, if I did purchase a laptop again it would more than likely be a thinkpad. That must have been expensive.

If you're going 27" then 1080p is a bad idea.  If you really want the extra refresh rate then go for it but I would recommend 1440p for a 27" screen.  Higher resolution is better than higher Hz in my opinion, your SLI 780 will easily handle it as well.

Agreed. I just setup my U2713HM today as my main monitor to try some games out. Yes there is some input lag but I like the higher resolution and the amazing color production more than refresh rate.
