Graphics card issues. Why me?

This morning I went to turn on my computer and had this happen with my GTX 970 installed:

I tried numerous restarts and the computer would post, but as soon as it went to load windows, that happened. I switched it out for my GTX 650Ti and had the same problem:

Which after a few seconds turned into this (the line was scanning down and growing):


Could some one please help me shed some light on this? As I am at a loss as to what the problem is considering that neither graphics card worked, and I'm able to use the iGPU just fine.

My computer specs:
i5 4440
GTX 970/650TI (neither installed currently)

ASUS H87M-Pro motherboard (latest update, resetting it via the CMOS battery did nothing as well)

Corsair VS650

16GB RAM

Corsair LS Force 60GB

WD Blue 1TB

Toshiba 320GB SATA II 2.5" HDD
DVD super recorder

Try to re install the nvidia drivers while booted on the igpu. Also do u have some amd card to try to confirm this idea that the drivers are the problem?

Also try putting the gpu in other pci slots to make sure the slot isn't the problem.

sounds like either a dead pci e slot or your nvidia drivers

Sounds like a bent/defective PCI slot to me

 

Try re-installing in another slot?  Also try putting a different PCI card in that slot and see if it works.

I'm not sure, as I haven't even had the motherboard for 12 months.

I reverted back to version 344.16, which I used when I first installed my GTX 970 and had the same problem again with both it and my 650Ti.

I can't, the second one is only PCIex16 @x2 generation2, and it only works if a graphics card is plugged into the top slot.

 

Did you try booting into Safe Mode?

I tapped F8 after post and the issues still recurred, so I couldn't try safe mode.

PCI 16 gen 2 is almost the same as pci 8 gen 3.  It will not bottleneck the card but I stand corrected if I am wrong.  I just find it odd that you can't use the other slot and it has to be the first one.  Guess the motherboard has it's limitations.

Unfortunately 11 months ago I didn't know what to look for in a motherboard, so I didn't specify what I wanted to the people building my computer and as a result got the H87M Pro.

Looks like your second full lenght pci-e slot is 4x gen 2. It should work and if it does, it would point to a problem with your top pci-e slot and therefore motherboard.

I just tried that to be sure, and the computer posted and didn't even recognize either GPU and selected the iGPU.

Edit: the second x16 slot is only x4 if the 2 PCIex1 slots are disabled, which disables my wifi card and therefore cuts me off from the internet. In normal use its only x2, which is pathetic IMO.

Ouch sorry to hear that.  before we rule it as a hardware issue, make sure to completely remove and install the drivers using the built in intel gpu.  I would even take it a step further by resetting the CMOS (UEFI) to the stock settings.  Install the gpu and try it again.  While you are at it, check for any debris inside PCI slot 1. Compressed air usually does the trick.  Also look for any bent pins.

I did a clean install of the drivers originally with no luck, and I removed the CMOS battery to reset the bios and had the same problems. The PCIe slot is clean as I blew it out last month when I finished testing my GTX 970 in my old rig an reinstalled it in my main.

Try cleaning it again if you have not done that already.  I almost want to say there is a bent pin somewhere but what is strange is that this happened over time when it used to work.

I haven't noticed any at all and the GTX 970 is very rigid being the G1 Gaming, but if it is the motherboard I have until the 9th of February to return it.

If you did, wondering if over the course of time, that the pci slot might have loosened itself from the mainboard.

Well I have had issues with it before, namely the VRM overheating with the locked i5 and ASUS was no help. I'm going to try a few more things out so I won't be answering comments for a while.

I don't recommend doing this but it's up to you.  Install the GPU and when it is powered on, lift the gpu card to relieve the weight from the pci slot and slightly push the card in.  Check the monitor and see if it fixes itself.

Are you 100% sure? my ASUS z87 Gryphon boots with a card plugged in to either slot. I had to use the second slot to clear my PSU until I got a larger case.

Probably the motherboard , or the PCI slot you need another motherboard for testing.
