3DMark 'API Overhead feature test' Coming soon

Let the testing commence (Soon)

API Overhead feature test
Coming soon

Games make thousands of draw calls per frame, but each one creates performance-limiting overhead for the CPU. APIs with less overhead can handle more draw calls and produce richer visuals. The 3DMark API Overhead feature test is the world's first independent test for comparing the performance of DirectX 12, Mantle, and DirectX 11. See how many draw calls your PC can handle with each API before the frame rate drops below 30 fps.

I can see this ending up being very useful.

not sure how sarcastic you are. this basically tells one how close he can come to playing unoptimised titles good...

Mostly sarcastic. I won't be surprised if it ends up being used by Guru3D, Toms, etc for graphics card comparisons.

except that the gpu will pretty much not matter here. this is a cpu+API benchmark

Just as a benchmark on the same API with the same CPU to find out how it performs. :P I have a feeling DX12 will change hardware performance gaps.

GPUs wont affect changes nearly as much between APIs as CPUs will

Having less overhead yes they will?

That is CPU dependant again ;)

Luka, I love ya man but I have to strongly disagree with you on this one bud.

Having an apples to apples comparison for different APIs is useful. Straight out the box it helps users decide between Nvidia and DX or AMD and Mantle, being able to look at objective comparisons between the 2 is vital to making the correct choice over the coming months when the API war begins.

There's a reason why this is the most requested feature over on SPUD, because a lot of people want a way to compare between DX 11 & Mantle (and obviously 12 when it comes).

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

I didnt say its useless, just its too overhyped.

DX will be on AMD as well ;)
