Hard drive DOA?

Go to solution Solved by ELSknutson,

New.

just return it and get a new one

So I recently got home to find that the HDD I ordered was delivered. I put it in my rig to find that it isn't recognised (spins up and the head moves but not recognised by windows or the UEFI) despite trying several different connectors and ports. I know it seems like a stupid question and I believe I already know the answer :( but I just want to make sure I'm not being completely stupid before I send it back.

I'd imagine it was new, could be DOA, if it's not picked up at all then most likely. Happens.

Did you connect a sata cable to it? And if its your first harddrive did you install and OS on it?

Did you read the OP? Thought not.

Yes, I tried several SATA cables (both power and data) as well as several different ports and no, it isn't my first drive.

You said it doesn't appear in Windows. Did you actually open the application Disk Management. And with that application open, did you format it? I assume you only attempted to see it using Computer.

I also said it doesn't appear in the UEFI which, logically, was what I checked after checking the disk management. Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, it's dead. Just hope that the second drive works otherwise I'll be calling BS on Hitachi's low failure rates.

I don't think it's dead if the disk is spinning and the head is moving. That being said, the circuit board may be damaged in some way. You're misinterpreting what a low failure rate is. It doesn't mean that there are no failures. It means that you're unlikely to get a failed product. You may have been one of the unlucky few(assuming their failure rates are indeed low).

I never said that it means there's no failures. I'm just saying that I'll be calling BS on their low failure rate if I receive a second drive that is either completely or effectively DOA.
