Hello everyone, my dad has an old DELL Dimension E521 which has an am2 motherboard and SATA II ports, he wanted to get a new SSD (probably a samsung 840 120 gb) and I know that the SSD will be bottlenecked by the SATA II interface, so I thought about getting a 20 bucks pcie SATA III controller. The problem is that I have heard plenty of bad things in terms of performance or reliability about these 3rd party sata controllers. I also know that the SSD will still be plenty fast compared to an HDD even on SATA II interface, but I still want to get the most performance out of the SSD. Is it worth it to buy a 3rd party controller for the SSD or would I be better of using the SATA II connection of the motherboard?

Use the sata II interface. The only speed that would be bottlenecked would be the sustained transfer speeds which isn't what makes an ssd snappy. The random access and read speeds will still be fast enough with sata II.
