Lets see if we can keep track.

Im getting a new mobo, as i purchased a smaller case.

My old mobo had both drives installed under AHCI mode in my computer.

I will be giving that board to my mums pc who has drives in IDE mode.

She gets a new i3 to keep her going (her last AMD athlon locks up, cant get it to stop)

My new board should come predefined in IDE, correct?

Before i boot can i change the drive mode on both mobo's to support the already up and running drives in each computer?

last time i changed from IDE to ahci while i had an os installed i bricked an MSI mobo, gave it to a dude that said "yeah dont worry i can fix it not much of an issue" a day later "yeah your broke it"

Soo, transplant incoming, im no surgeon, i hope its easier said then done.

I want a casual meeting with an Elephant, Orangutan, Crow and a Bottlenose Dolphin.

its a general rule of thumb that anytime you change boards you reload windows, yes what you say can be done but its not recommended

Would i be safer to boot without drives attached to the mobo?

change sata mode, save changes, restart.

Then reconnect the drives?

nope, when you install windows it registers your hardware, no matter how you do it you should always re install windows when you change the motherboard

To be safe i would get a new hard drive, when you get a new m/board you will have to do a re-install.

back everything up and even do a system image on your old system first. then use an SSD or a hybrid or something and fresh install.

New m/boards will have Sata interface and so its a no brainer to get a new hard drive and make it simple.

got to love Asus components

i dont realy see why you should get a new hdd you could just do a fresh install
