CPU and SLI

Go to solution Solved by 79wjd,

So another question i have is the one 970 i have right now running at 16x or 8x? The cpu has only 16pci slots. I can tell if some of you are trolling me or not. Sorry

If you only have one gpu (and no other PCIE cards/devices) then it will run in x16. Not that it matters since even PCIE2.0x4 won't bottleneck any modern GPUs and PCIE3.0x8 has four times the bandwidth has 2.0x4.

So both gpus will not bottleneck the cpu?

There will be no bottlenecks.

ok thank you. Just trying to make sure before i purchase all the upgrades. My next will be a processor. Just want to get this stuff out of the way first

Well, before you start upgrading....

The sabertooth is an overkill board and not really worth the money, and 8gb of ram is still plenty for gaming -- so 12gb is more than enough.

So for a psu, I would go with an EVGA G2 750w, and for the motherboard I would go with an MSI Z97 Krait, MSI Z97s SLI Plus, MSI G55 SLI, MSI Z97 Gaming 5, Gigabyte Z97x SLI, Gigabyte Z97 Gaming 5, Asus Z97-A, or an Asus Z97-AR.

Yes, you will need at least a 850W PSU to run SLI.

700W will work but you will be maxing out the PSU which is no good!

No he will not. SLI 970s can run just fine on a 650w psu with plenty of room to spare -- hell SLI 970s can run on a 500w psu.

I ran two gtx 760's on a 700W PSU overclocked, the power supply was being maxed out 100% to the point where I would get blue screens.

650W non-overclocked gold maybe.. I wouldn't risk it.

i already have the psu you mentioned jn my amazon cart. I wanted some head room for adding some other stuff if i wanted to. I will be using this more for video editing and such. Gaming is just a plus on it. I really like the control of the cooling system with the sabertooth

970s are far more efficient. Not to mention you can easily run two 760s on a 700w psu -- your psu was probably just crap.

A complete system with a single 760 peaks around 300w~: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/GPU14/885%C2'> would put a system with dual 760s at significantly under 700w.

145W for GTX 970.

170W for GTX 760.

Very close, running your PSU near max is really really bad.

The PSU is one of the most important things in your computer, if something goes wrong you can damage your parts & possibly catch your house on fire.

A complete system with a single 760 draws 261w during Furmark: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/GPU14/838

i am deffinatley open to suggestions though. I am new to this, so every little bit helps a ton

A 750w psu is fine, 16gb of ram is fine for editing (You can actually just get another 4gb stick of ram to add to your 12 -- I assume you have three 4gb sticks). The only thing I would change is go for a cheaper motherboard as the only real difference is the bios layout and appearance -- but thats up to you to figure out.

Still not 'very close' SLI 970s can easily run on a 650w psu and still not be anywhere near 100% load.

only reason i want the 750 is for a little over head, in case i want to add more later.

Oh, I don't disagree, if you can afford an EVGA G2 750w psu than you should get it as it's one of the best (excluding AXi/P2/T2). As for adding more later -- theres not much you can add :P Z97 only supports two way-SLI (unless you get a board with a PLX chip, which are very expensive and three-way scaling in games is horrendous). And not much else draws power (but I do still think a G2 750w psu is the best choice).

Yeah but, I could upgrade to a decent sound card for sound recording capabilites later
