CPU and SLI

Go to solution Solved by 79wjd,

So another question i have is the one 970 i have right now running at 16x or 8x? The cpu has only 16pci slots. I can tell if some of you are trolling me or not. Sorry

If you only have one gpu (and no other PCIE cards/devices) then it will run in x16. Not that it matters since even PCIE2.0x4 won't bottleneck any modern GPUs and PCIE3.0x8 has four times the bandwidth has 2.0x4.

Here is what Im running at the moment
Intel i-7 4790s
GTX970 ref, wanting to run 2 in SLI
h81m-e mother board, getting a sabertooth Z97
12gb memory, upping that to 16gb vengence pro 1600
500w evga  power supply, I figure a 850wgold should be enough for this.

Ok,
So my question is. Will the 16slot pci on the CPU be enough to do this?

My name is Chris. I am new here, Please be nice hahah.

yes, both cards will run in x8. You'll be fine. Welcome! :D

Yes, it will

If you're just gaming then 12gb of ram is more than enough (8gb is even enough). You can also run SLI 970s on a 500-550w psu (albeit at near 100% load).

Each will run at 8x8x with no performance degradation.

If you want the most efficiency from a power supply, then you'll want one whose capacity is ~20% at idle and ~50%-70% at load. Without getting too technical, a good 620W will do you good.

I guess what I am asking is. Will it be worth it? I will have to see if there are any modular 620w

Yes, SLI is very much worthwhile. Even PCIE 2.0x4 won't bottleneck any modern gpu let alone 3.0x8 (which is four times as fast as 2.0x4). And yeah, thats the biggest issue with <650w psus as you just have to make sure you get one that has enough connectors as they often don't.

Two way SLI scaling is very good and the best that SLI offers (diminishing returns once you reach three and especially four way). This begs the question of the resolution of your monitor though?

I'm stuck between a few monitors. My price range is right around 400 dollars so most likely 1080p, which I'm ok with until 4K tech gets cheaper.

2.0 x4 can bottleneck slightly actually :) Very slightly.

Honestly, a single 980 will do just fine at 1080p.

I actually have 970s in SLI and they draw 400W off the wall with my 4670K overclocked when i am strerss testing my system. So a ~700W PSU will allways be in it's best efficiency range (around 50-60% load) when playing games.

who cares...

I already have one 970. The hard part of this is finding another refrence model 970. Newegg has them but will not let you cart them unless it is in a build.

I was also thinking that it needed more power after looking for a bit. Thank you.

You don't need to get a reference 970, any 970 will work. (unless you just want it for looks)

a single 970 even is overkill at 1080p.

The most i would advise spending for a 1080p card would be the 290.

But thats just me

I have grown fond of Nvidia, Also want it to be 4k ready when the tech price drop a bit more

OP it seems you have money to burn so why not look into a nice 80 Plus Titanium PSU.

I do have a budget and I didn't ask for any smart remarks. The subject has been solved. Thank you though

It's not a smart ass remark. If you can afford a Titanium PSU then it's an amazing investment. The subject however was not in fact solved when I originally replied so whom being a smart ass here ?

You do understand that 'who's' is short for 'who is/was/has"...

"Whom being a smart ass here?" or "Who is/was being a smart ass here?"

"whom being a smartass here?" is just plain wrong.
