so like most of us, we are fond of linux, we know what it is and some of us run it as a daily driver. but what makes it so good in our minds and hearts? i installed it on my laptop and have been using it for a month. i got used to it very quickly but i still feel as if  windows is just that tad bit better. i mean if i had to pick and choose between an os like windows or 'in this case' Ubuntu and both offered the same applications and everything so the only difference was only the OS. i couldn't choose. its like picking between an htc m7 and a sony z3. they are both awesome devices but one is just that tad bit better, but you would also love to have the ip57 rating of the sony as well. i guess by some peoples standards im still new to the OS and i really am. all i use my laptop for is using libre office and watching movies and surfing chrome. i would have loved it if i could put sony vegas in there and render a video or two side by side from my PC.

why do you find linux better than windows or mac, aside from the price of using the competitors?

Turns out its not that dark since dem robots are filled with lights, i waved hi to the Russians on the space station, turns out all those stories about space finding humans instead of the other way around is true(soviet Russia joke). They threw me some Heineken beer and I've been sitting staring at the people of this forum and earth since.

A lot of people use Linux?

I always have, and most likely always will use Windows.

I've played around with Linux at a friends. It doesn't entice me. I also have no problem with paying for something that works (Windows).

yes exactly. and i just thought alot of people on this forum do because i see desktop screen caps from certain threads and alot are linux mint and other stuff. but yea windows just works. i have gripes with Ubuntu where i cant find an app i downloaded without searching for it. and uninstalling just doesnt go through alot of times.

my brothers old laptop that he got in 2009 broke down. it was a simple hdd crash so i thought. hey its still an i7 why not throw an ssd in there. then i decided to put linux on it for the hell of it and i started to wonder how its so appealing to people. all those customizations they talk about. i barley found any(guess im not looking hard enough) i cant go into folders as much as windows gives you the freedom to, and the settings are not that in dept either and basically looks like an apple thing to do.

Like?

Like installing simple browser?

I had to do it with some download manager or whatever and it didn't worked (could not connect as network adapter was not configured). Half of programs that i searched for and found in that manager would not install (i think skype was one example).

I don't say its confusing to everyone. But it is confusing to me as I am used to windows.

on some portable version it could not find my wifi card for example.

I dual-boot windows (for games and programs that only run on windows) and linux (for all the other stuff), and I like windows for the looks (I'm talking about windows 7, I find windows 8 horrible, worst UI I've ever seen) and linux for security and other stuff

Fair enough. I won't really argue against your points since everyone has different learning curves, but it's not as hard as you play it out to be.

To install chrome literally all you do is put this in the terminal (line by line). Same principal for most applications. You can also use the software store for Ubuntu.

sudo apt-get install libxss1 libappindicator1 libindicator7wget (put chrome deb link here)sudo dpkg -i google-chrome*.deb

For a Power User, this would be no problem.

For a regular average Joe computer user, EVER having to go into the terminal is 100% unacceptable.

The only reason android caught on is because:

1. uniform experience: There's only Android, not 40 different distro's all doing different things and looking different and sometimes sorta being cross compatible but not always

2. GUI: Google spent a lot of time fine-tuning the user experience. There's essentially no Terminal. Everything is easy to use and fairly intuitive. Android has only gotten better over time at this.

For Linux to catch on, they're going to have to learn some lessons from Android and Windows.
