Suggested by the title this topic is going to be about overclocking the i5 2500K with an i30 air cooler by Arctic. The motherboard i have is included in my signature, my question is, can i overlock my processor to 4.0 Ghz minimum with the i30 cooler and my motherboard? The thing is the powerphase of the motherboard is only 4 phases. This is my first time overclocking a desktop CPU so is it safe at that frequency with my board?

My PC specs; Processor: Intel i5 2500K @4.6GHz, Graphics card: Sapphire AMD R9 Nano 4GB DD Overclocked @1050MHz Core and 550 MHz Memory. Hard Drives: 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM, 2TB Western Digital Green Drive, Motherboard: Asus P8Z77-V , Power Supply: OCZ ZS series 750W 80+ Bronze certified, Case: NZXT S340, Memory: Corsair Vengance series Ram, Dual Channel kit @ 1866 Mhz, 10-11-10-30 Timings, 4x4 GB DIMMs. Cooler: CoolerMaster Seidon 240V

You will never know until you start, all chips are different, start with a moderate OC and keep going up from there and when your temps are too high for your liking back it off a bit.

before you attempt overclocking, verify that you have the latest BIOS (6.1) from MSI.

this can be helpful as that seemed to be the biggest complaint on the G43 is when

overclocking, throttling issues and premature BSOD occurs.

start with the video guide that was posted earlier and that should get you to simple overclocking.

from experience (i have an asus board though which are pretty easy to OC on with the UEFI bios) 4.0 should be pretty easily attainable. but like the guys are saying, go up in small increments and keep an eye on everything like temps and voltages.

So the fan arrived and i had fitted it on the motherboard with arctic mx4, i bumped up the multiplyer to 42 and done some satbility tests using OCCT Linpack and get a max tenp of 70 degress celcius but the Vcore is at 1.34v which is crazy, the board does not even have manual voltage control. I don't know what to do, should i buy a new motherboard, i can get the MSI Z68A-GD80 (G3) for £80 brandnew which is about $120 US. I just don't feel comfortable with such high voltages for such a low clock, it might be the 'silicon lottery' but I think it is auto volts. Should I buy the new board because it is dirt cheap?

use it for stress testing. and you may be able to adjust voltages etc.

I tried it, it won't let me do any thing, would you recommend me to get the MSi Z68-A GD80 (G3)? My board is very limited.

Well if it AMD the procedure is different and you have much more controll over everything such as the front side bus. Here is a guide which may help you.
