Coil Whine

Go to solution Solved by zlolslavez,

replaced psu, no whine. /closed

I currently have some whining in my computer that I am pointing to either PSU or GPU, most likely PSU. I have a 500 watt power supply sitting around to test if it's my PSU, but will that suffice? I have a R9 270x and FX 8350 oc to 4.4 GHZ (Normally runs on 750 watts)

Does it whine at stock clockspeeds as well? Maybe having to output less voltage would chill the PSU.

Just a tip out of personal experience, being that I experience coil whine when I stress test my FX-8320 at a higher clock than 4.5Ghz (and only when it's got a bit warm inside there).

The power supply is supposed to output a constant 12V to the CPU. The power delivery on the board then takes care of the conversion to 1.7. Then the VRM splits it among the different components of the CPU. (GPU, cache, memory controller, etc.) Power supplies do have a bit of wiggle room with voltages, but they still need to sit around 3.3V, 5V, and 12V.

I might have used the wrong word there. Wattage, then?

That term is fine.
