Is every SandForce SSD-controller bad?
There are two issues with the Sandforce controller... 1) it's a compression controller. To get its numbers it compresses the data on the fly. Fine, except not all data is compressable and that slows down things a ton. That Marvell that was quoted gets its numbers from uncompressed data. It's far more consistent.
2) The controller is getting old. Sandforce has been in trouble for at least a year, being bounced around by a few owners. They haven't released anything new in a while and times a wasting. Phison has a new controller out that looks really interesting and that might put even more pressure on the SF team.
Put all that together and the Sandforce controller is, at best, a 2nd tier unit. It's not bad, but there's better out there and not having a SF is no penalty.
