PCI-E w/ cpu question?

Go to solution Solved by Sauron,

CPUs do not "require" any pcie slot at all. They just support some. So that doesn't affect anything, at all :) And to be honest, your gpu would run just fine on a pcie 3.0 4x slot (although there is no reason not to use the 16x slot).

Hello, and thanks for reading this already!

So i'm planning to build my own rig, but I've just encountered something

My motherboard has 3 PCI-E x16 slots, with one running at 16, one at 8+8+0, and one at, 8+4+4.

My graphics card plainly requires a x16 slot, so I'm connecting him tot the 16.

But my CPU requires OR a 1x16 OR a 2x8.

So now my question is, will connecting him to the 2x8 affect its performance?

Thanks in advance!

You're CPU goes into the socket in the middle. What you're reading is how many PCI-E lanes it supports. Just put your GPU in the 16X slot and you'll be fine.

Your processor doesn't depend on a PCIE slot so you're good

1. My motherboard has 3 PCI-E x16 slots, with one running at 16, one at 8+8+0, and one at, 8+4+4.

2. My graphics card plainly requires a x16 slot, so I'm connecting him tot the 16.

3. But my CPU requires OR a 1x16 OR a 2x8.

1.) Actually, your 3 slots will either run in 16/0/0, 8/8/0 or 8/4/4 (x/y/z means slot #1 runs with x, slot #2 runs with y and slot #3 runs with z lanes.)

2.) Physical (=length) 16x slot is required, but it will run on less than 16 electronically (8x not even holding it back any)

3.) (as has been mentioned already) your CPU provides 16 lanes, it doesn't use up any of them. And it provides them to your PCIe slots depending on what you put into these slots, in one of the three possible configs shown in 1.)
