how does it work? can i make a decent amount of money just driving in my spare time?

Driver uses an specific application on their phone to calculate the fares by using the time of day and distance. The negatives are the customers: drunks, pussy pass feminists, and thugs usually harass the driver. I wouldn't suggest using uber as you are putting your property and health on the line for some measly dollars.
