How about somewhere inside the case, as far away from any components or fans as possible, so that you'll know the air temp inside the case?

This is probably a good idea; I assume I can tell the case fans to spool up when that sensor reaches a certain temp.

I'm afraid not. There are loads of sensor inputs though. All this makes Apple's engineering look pretty amazing. My Macs have a massive load of sensors that are all over the place; all controlled mysteriously by the BIOS.
