I5 4690 nonk

So iasked a question awhile back and was told that having a non_k cpu means it cannot be oc"d. But after reading around that doesnt seem to be true. It seems to be harder maybe but not impossible. So whats the story. Im brand new to all of this stuff so the more in depth details.the better. Cheers, dza

Also can all mobos oc generally?

4th gens are overclocked by increasing the front-side-bus multiplier. non-K have a "locked" multiplier.

The only way to overclock is to increase the front-side-bus from 100mhz to something higher.

the issue is that due to the architecture of Intel chipsets and 3rd / 4th gens it is very difficult to have a stable overclock when increasing the FSB. you can sometimes get 105 MHz or 108 MHz but any higher is very rare.

The front side bus is linked to some other I/O controllers and handles the PCI and memory speeds. offset adjustments against these must be made to avoid them causing instability.

Its generally just not a great way to go, if you want to overclock a 4th gen then you really want to up the multiplier, hence a "K" chip

MOST mobo's can overclock. not all but most.
