Best Hard Drives

Hi, I'm new to storage options. I need to understand what makes hard drives better than others. I'm planning on buying a ton for my computer and home server options. Not really looking into an SSD or SSD for the time being.

I generally go with WD

There are a couple of types that are made for different things

WD Black: High end fast drives

WD Blue: Mid Range all-round drives

WD Red: Raid configs (more reliable)

WD Purple: Video surveillance (always on drives)

So if you plan on having a lot, I would go with a few Reds

CPU: i5-4690k GPU: 280x Toxic PSU: Coolermaster V750 Motherboard: Z97X-SOC RAM: Ripjaws 1x8 1600mhz Case: Corsair 750D HDD: WD Blue 1TB

if you are looking for mass storage you are probably in need of some high reliability drives over anything else. The WD reds are NAS grade drives so those are a good option but i would still recommend backing all of your important stuff up. i would get some of the Hitachi deskstars they are ultra cheap (2tbs for around 70 US dollars) and are really reliable as far as i know.

I have a Hitachi and they're slow

By the way, I've heard of hard drive failure, is there software that can be aware of this kind of issue? Like be able to detect if it is failing or is close to failing?

You will notice SIGNIFICANT performance drops and the drive will be very loud.

I forget, but I know it claims a max or 3 Gb/S

That is just the max speed of the SATA connection, not the drive's speed - and that information is pretty much worthless.
