My parents and siblings have started to become pissed after i moved to the pc master race and can now download bandwidth cap free. Since we don't have wired networking (no one cared until know) i am hogging all the wifi bandwidth and it is pissing them off so my parents say that if its a reasonable price they will run wires to my room (don't know how it works or i would do it my self). Anyway the house is finished and has to go up 1 floor and across the house (up 1 floor and then 8m). Lastly i want it to split into a 4 port thing (for desktop, laptop, wii u and ps4). So does anybody have any estimates as the the price (we are having a expert in but i want to know ahead of time)

google powerline, not just saying that to be a dick. Theres literally tons of options, 250 mpb kits are like $50 and 500 mpb and higher start at $100. I freaking love these things, I have 4 of them, just plug them into a wall socket whereever you need a good connection.

EDIT: what usually happens is that your upload speed given to you by your ISP (internet service provider) gets topped out before your download, so a slow down appears to happen. Check with your ISp to see if there is any price equivalent upgrades. My piss poor isp, Eastlink, literally didn't tell my family that we can be upgraded from 5 down 0.2 up to 40 down and 4 up for the same cost

i have heard of them from Linus' old ncix tech tips video where he compared power line, WiFi and Ethernet and power line wasn't as fast as Ethernet. Has it improved since then?. Will i lose speed? Thx

Depends on the construction of your house. If it's old school drywall with a cavity behind the walls the cost of installation is neglible. If it's newer style stud construction and  your parents don't mind unsightly conduit running up your walls then the costs are the same. You can do your own research on the costs of a router (that 4 port thing). If your parents want to run cable inside the wall in a newer house however it can get very expensive.

An option to wired might be to find yourself a multi band wireless router, probably one running on the 5Ghz band. Your family's devices will probably continue to use the older 2.4Ghz band, and with the appropriate wireless card in your computer you'll be using the 5Ghz band all by yourself.

Of course If your downloads of P....Games is chewing up the house's entire bandwidth from your ISp then you are So out of luck.

What are you doing? for gaming a 250 mpb kit is excellent, for netflix a 500 mpbs is beuitful cause it can support the raw through put. Those two examples are if your trying to save money, if not I would recommend just buying two 500 mpbs starter kits (4 units) and put them everywhere.

EDIT: the thing you have to remember if your not doing alot of streaming over the network, you will be fine with powerline, this is because there is an excellent chance that your ISP isn't even offering nearly as close to the speed of the powerline unit (even the 250mpb one). Linus demonstrated over the network file transfer, the cheapest powerline system wouldn't even top out on the average ISP connection.

ahh this is where i am troubled. I have a shitty mac book pro (soon getting a windows laptop hopefully) and i use steam in home streaming to play games when my parents don't want me using a mechanical keyboard on my desktop

yeah man, not sure about that, I can (somewhat) get a 720p 30fps on a 300mpbs solution, I haven't tried my newer 600mpbs kit yet. I would assume that the 600mpbs would be able to do either 720p 60fps or 1080p 30fps.

You will have to look up reviews on steam streaming for powerline units. You can always buy a 100 foot box of cat 5 and make your own cables, thats if your parents will let you have wires lay everywhere. I don't seen another option, what router are you currently using btw?

EDIT: heres my 600mpbs kit, as you can see you can literally get these powerline units everywhere that tech is sold.

I would get a powerline kit, then just throttle your own downloads so you don't destroy everything for everyone else.

The shitty one rogers (candian isp) gives us. They don't support third party routers.

yeah shoot, I know what your talking about, my isp tried to pull the same BS. You should be able to run a hardwire off of it. Don't make the mistake of getting wireless range extenders they really don't work.

Alright ill do some research on the stuff but to address the second paragraph rogers (Canadian isp) gives u a shitty router and doesnt support third party routers. I have been trying to get my parents to rogers and threaten to leave to get the dual band modem but they never get around to anything. I pretty much do everything around the house tech related xD.

To adress your last point when i download over Ethernet (carrying 50 pound pc down stairs and undoing all the cable management i did to my desk) it downloads 3 times as fast 30 megabits/ second and doesn't slow down the WiFi too much.

Nothing special 35 down and 4 up (advertised) but ookla says its about 35 down and 2-3 up. I know power line wont limit that but i am worried about pings, when i host lan's and in home streaming

with powerline your ping won't be the problem, its going to be your required through put. Hmmm, if it where me, I would have figured out how to turn the wifi off on the box and run a cat 5 connection to a proper router. Your connection is actually very similar to mine at home. By the sounds of it, your inconveniences are caused by your ISP, I would ask your parents if they meet someone at a Rogers home internet store (its best to meet in person) and get your whole router/modem thing sorted out.

Im rather curious about your router/cable modem. Does it have any other outputs? like cat 5 or usb? If it where my cable modem I would try and find a way to get into the routers log in page and disable the wifi, then set it to a bridge (?) and then connect a router in access point mode.

Im not gonna lie i have no idea what ur talking about lol. But the router has power in, coax in (i think its coax) and lastly 4 lan ports 1 of which populated with our family computer.

any one of those lan ports can be populated by a wifi router, you just need your ISP to change your router from 'access point' to 'bridge' in order to remove potential errors and so on. You can do it without the ISP's help, but by the sounds of it, that task maybe too difficult.

For your game consoles you can split the power line connection using a simple gigabyte switch, their like $20 at ncix.
