Hi all, recently my mobo has started loosing functionality, so I'm guessing it's at it's last breath. (Marvel SATA 6Gb/s chip is now lost to the world...)

I have a ASUS Gene III and an i7 970, still doing fine in most titles I play, but as stated above... it's begun to die...

I am currently considering going for a i7 4790K and an undecided Z97 1150 mobo, can't decide which as I don't really like the UEFI/BIOS of my ASUS board, mostly the looks and feel of it, nothing against it's functionality, any one have any suggestions and some reasons for them? :)

I'm also considering going for "low end" X99 CPU, but seeing as I would need to buy new RAMs too, I'm not certain I can justify it's cost, for an unknown performance gain,

as it's ~10 000 SEK (~1358 USD) for this instead of ~5600 SEK ~(760 USD) for for the Z97 and 4790K, I do generally keep a lot of programs running even while gaming, and I run dual monitor, so for the X99 to be worth it it must be noticeably better, it's not a budget problem, just a need to decide what to go for and do it.

I am aware that DDR4 isn't really worth it vs DD3 today, but if the processor is that much better (~122 USD (900 SEK)) so that the cost can be justified I'd like to go that route, mostly for bragging rights and the satisfaction of knowing that I've just spent 600$ more than I needed too to gain more performance than I need right now, am planing to get in to digital art, but that is at least half a year from now...

any way, sorry for a rambling post, hope someone get's through it and is willing to give me some advice.

Best wishes from your humble newbie enthusiast.

Honestly, ASUS' BIOS is one of the best now. I would go for a TUF board or a ROG board if you really want to.

Wait for skylake.

desktop version of skylake might be end of year though, as mobile versions come first (despite all the talk of skylake launching right after broadwell desktop).

I will primarily use it for gaiming, but seeing as I do keep about 40-50 programs running at near all times I find it most stable to use an i7, my gaming list ranges from games from the late 90's to newly released.

I don't think my mobo will hold up until skylake unless it comes out within the next few months, the first thing to die was one of the USB 3.0 slots, that was around june 2014, yesterday my marvel sata controler died, which means I'm down at sata 2.0, feels realy slow by comparison (very noticeable at least)

Yes, it is still good enough for what I do, however, my mobo is failing and there is no replacement mobo's avaiable to anywhere near a decent price, and I can't find any non used.

Might ad that my case is a Corsair Obsidian 800D, so there's plenty of room to spare

Get a cheap non oc mobo as ur temporary one and wait for skylake or just get x99 immediately

No point buying a new mobo of the same and maybe the CPU is dying too right

true, but seeing as I have a 1336 (?) mobo and CPU, I will need to upgrade CPU at same time, I don't like making multiple buys in a life cycle, seeing as this one lasted me 4.5 years I think I would need to get one that lasts at least 3.5 years. But now that I've reread your post a couple of times (it's pretty early here, and I need to go to bed...) I see that that might bee exactly your point, this gives me another point to consider and I welcome your input thank you :)

Going through past posts, is there really nothing better than ASUS mobos right now, regarding UEFI and the like, or have they gotten that much better since 2010? (relating to tmcclelland455's post) and I must say I'm not really sure as to what a "TUF" board is, and my googling skills are lacking at the moment, anyone who would like to spare me some time while I go to bed? xD

X99 is not useful if u don't edit

U shud get i7 4970k

U keep Ur ddr3

It has better nm and oc

Or if u have more monehhhh to spend

Go for the 5820k

If i were u

I'll probably get a i5 4690k

If the CPU is alrdy broken

If not I'll keep the CPU buy new mobo and get new gpu

The CPU works, but it's a socket 1366, for which I can't find a suitably priced mobo (cost's more than a high end 1150 mobo), as for getting a i7 4970k, I can't find that at all >.< regarding an i5, have any experience with dual monitoring with that? I usualy keep more than 50 programs running, any experience with running games on an i5 with that? :)

I'd go with a 4790k rather than an x99 build.

Yes, that is what I'm starting to lean to more, since I won't be doing video editing, and my plans for digital art are quite far of, and I've come to understand that most workstations for digital art aren't running things much better than an i5 most of the time :/

So, I've pretty much decided to go with an i7 4790k, now I'm just battling with my self  about getting an ASUS MAXIMUS VII FORMULA or an MSI GAMING 9 ACK, mostly choosing between them for looks, they cost roughly the same, and I'm planing on watercooling no matter which I get.

Now anyone got any experience with either who could recommend or give caution against either?

Is the plastic "heat shield" removable on the ASUS board? Don't know if I like it or not :/

Would really love some help deciding,

With love from your humble newbi enthusiast :)

For red and black theme, the maximus vii hero would be better, not as pricey but the features are still quite good. If you wanted to go insane sli/crossfire gigabyte soc force with more oc features than you will ever need but could do 4-way sli, but it is orange rather than red and sound is decent. I actually think it looks nice though for that coloring.

As for brand comparisons, they are all good for the most part, especially at that price point. Usually people say asus has the better on board sound, if that helps.

Still new, but learning
