I was wondering which one is better...

 

4x4gb = 16gb

or

2x8gb = 16gb

 

which combination has more performance?

In gaming: Doesn't matter

In content creation: 4x4GB only if your board supports quad-channel

But 2x8 gives you expandability given that you have only 4 slots.

4x4 is mainly for redundancy, a dual channel config is good for those who plan on upgrading to the pro edition of windows and want more than 16GB.

Yes it will, just in 2 channel mode instead. Reading your motherboard's manual will tell you what slots to use in each configuration.

I'm not sure, I just plug it in and use it, without going too deep into the details. I only found out about dual and quad channel when looking for possible causes for faults on my motherboard.

You will have a performance of a dual channel system, if you could get more 2 dimms the system will perform better.
