SSD Cells

1. A single flash chip of a certain capacity

2. Usually after x TB written. The more you write, the faster they wear out

3. They become useless. They cannot store data anymore

1. What's an SSD cell?

2. In a recent teckquickie, Linus mentioned that ssd's cells could "wear out." How long will it be until they "wear out."

3. And what happens when they "wear out."

Read the LTT Beginner's Guide; it's like a guide on how to not be a moron

I'm pretty sure a 'cell' is an area on a chip corresponding to a single bit of stored information.

As for the OP's other questions. Drive manufacturers give you a rating of how many terabytes written they guarantee the drive will last, but drives usually last a lot longer than that. You can search for Tech Report's or Kit Guru's SSD endurance tests to see how well some popular models fare. And yeah, when flash wears out, the drive fails.

you probably wont have to worry about the wearing out

i remember linus saying in his 850 pro video, that there was one in testing that was writing countless amounts of data with no signs of wear.

does it happen? yes

is a huge concern? not at all.

Most SSD's last upward of 74tb's, so it should be fine.  Most Samsung, Intel, and Kingston drives run themselves up past a petabyte last I remember, so unless you're reading / writing constantly - a consumer driver has well beyond warranty and it's expected cell life.
