BOINC issues?

You could have a look at Einstein@home.

@alpenwasser does a fair bit of gpu grid.

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/GPU_computing

I set up my BOINC for the first time, using the tutorial that's pinned in this subforum, and I followed what I was supposed to do, got it started, managed my preferences and told it to use 100% of my CPU and to use my GPU's as well.

I've started using BOINC, and it seems to be running fine except for the fact that it won't use my GPU's.   (It's using 100% CPU, but no GPU)

I also told it to use my GPU always, and to use BOINC regardless of what I'm doing, so I'm unsure what the problem is.

Let me know if I need to take any pictures of my settings & where to take the picture if it helps.

I can't see that you have actually downloaded any gpu tasks

that isn't being worked, which means the most likely are either

A) they are out of gpu tasks

B,) They don't support gpu's.

Is that constellation you are running? if so i don't think they

have gpu support as of now.

OHH ok.

What "project / cause" should I join then?  Any recommendations?

Thanks buddy, I switched and it's putting a 70% load on both GPU's now!

Times for the projects have drastically improved, thx :D

Haha, nice, so I see we're going to have a new #1 in our team in the long run then? :P

What GPUs are you running?

two 970's :D

How fast are points by the way? I saw I needed 25k points for the badge, that shouldn't take long with 2 970's right?

This seems like a slightly less user friendly UI than F@H, I've been trying to figure out how everything works so far, :D

I have a single Titan working on GPUGrid, and I usually get about 400k~600k points per day. I don't know specifically how well the 970 does at GPU Grid, but I have read that the 980 is pretty good at computing in general (better than the 700 series, allegedly), so considering that the 970 is pretty closely related I think there's a good chance you'll get quite a bit more credits than I do in the long run. :D

GPU Grid assigns pretty hefty bonus points if you send back your work unit within 24 hours btw., which you should be able to do with the 970 I think (my Titan usually crunches through about four large units in 24 hours).

EDIT:

So you should be eligible for the BOINC badge within a few days at most, depending on how long it takes for the stats to sync. Welcome to the team! :)

EDIT 2:

Yes, the BOINC ecosystem can be a bit overwhelming for newcomers indeed.

How does GPU grid work exactly? I don't remember seeing that term in the tutorial thread.

I'm not really sure about the internals of GPU Grid specifically, but in general, BOINC works roughly like this (if this isn't what you meant, sorry):

- attach to project by making account there and attaching your machine (host) to it. This can also be done from an account manager automatically, such as bam.boincstats.com.

- your host will then download project work units from the project's servers (which are essentially just binary files, hence why they're called applications) and execute them (that's the actual number crunching part)

- once that's done, they're sent back to the project's servers

- the project will validate the results, and if they're good

- will give you credits for your work

- which will then eventually show up on centralised stats sites like boincstats.com, free-dc.org and so on.

BOINC is basically just the framework for all this, the actual number crunching applications you run on your hosts are written by the specific projects, and each project also maintains its own servers for work units and such (hence why some projects can go down for lack of funding while others keep running).

This is admittedly just what I remember off the top of my head, so take it with a small grain of salt. ;)

q

Once last question, is this how everything should look, correct GPU usages & how the work units should look as well?

I think that looks OK, yes. thumb.gif
