When adding RAM does the RAM sticks your adding have to be from the same brand and model as the ones you already have ?

Nope, but the chances are higher that it won't work properly.

I recommend buying a 2x 4GB, 2x 8GB etc. package, so the RAM sticks are tested in that configuration.

If they are not in the same channel: no

So 8GB of Crucial ballistix  DDR3(1600MHz) won't work properly with HyperX Fury 8GB also DDR3 1600 MHz?

maybe, As long as it has the right timings(Not clockspeed)

I mean they very likely WILL, but in general if you can you should get the same kind.

Case: Meatbag, humanoid - APU: Human Brain version 1.53 (stock clock) - Storage: 100TB SND (Squishy Neuron Drive) - PSU: a combined 500W of Mitochondrial cells - Optical Drives: 2 Oculi, with corrective lenses.

Maybe, maybe not. It can work but it might not work as well as if it was all the same, it might not work at all, or it might work perfectly. Bottom line we don't know, it's always safest to buy the same stuff, because those sticks are meant to work together.

Sorry if I'm thread hijacking but how can not the same brand of RAM work? DDR3 RAM is DDR3 RAM after all no? Only the heatsinks are different... no?

Timings can be different is tha main problem, would not work very well especially in the SAME channel.

Case: Meatbag, humanoid - APU: Human Brain version 1.53 (stock clock) - Storage: 100TB SND (Squishy Neuron Drive) - PSU: a combined 500W of Mitochondrial cells - Optical Drives: 2 Oculi, with corrective lenses.

But if you also get the same timings and frequency there is nothing different between other RAMs, it's only the heatsink.

Voltages, latencies and such can also differ. Even same-brand RAM could be less than 100% stable if you get them from seperate kits. But usually this just means that the faster memory chokes down.

Yeah but like I said, if you get the specs like voltages, speed, latencies, everything is the same. Less stable RAM usually just means it's because you have a faulty kit, no?

Well there IS a reason they specifically test kits together to make sure they work 100% before bundling them :P

Might one person with two different ram kits be able to combine them by finding the info for 9ne set, and putting the others in first and setting all the settings to the same as the other, and then insert the other ram. Would that work?

I've seen it work, but in that case it's wasn't 100% stable. Did pass memtest though.
