So at first I was planning on "upgrading" to an i7 3770K.. But upgrading to a 2 year old CPU isnt really upgrading so I changed my mind and I want your opinions.

Possible upgrade:

- i7 4820K (That's even cheaper than a 3770K lol)

- X79 extreme4 mobo

- dark rock pro 3 OR h80i

Opinions? Thoughts? Improvements?

Oh nice, the problem is that I have a color theme in my case so I need the black/gold ASRock mobo

I think the Asrock X79 is pretty a good board and the 4820k is a great CPU its just a little powerhungry (130W compared to 90W on the 4790K) but it runs really cool since the heatspreader is soldered directly to the chip.

Depends on what you wanna do with the build. For just gaming the 2500K OCed is plenty good enough and an upgrade is uneeded.

i agree, when it comes to gaming the ivy bridge E processor won't be really better than your current 2500K.

If you're looking for better multi-threaded performance to render videos faster for example then it's a worthy upgrade.

If you're looking for gaming performance your CPU is still potent enough to feed even the higher-end GPU's...

an haswell core i5-4690K would bring more benefit than the old 4820K in that regards...but both aren't a worthy upgrade to your current chip to be honest.

in that case you should probably look for a xeon E3 1230V3 or xeon E3 1231V3 which are based on haswell architecture and are the same as their i7 counterparts (i7-4770 and i7-4790 respectively) but only miising the iGPU (integrated graphics) but they are often cheaper than the i7's...pair any of those CPU with a cheap H97 motherboard and you're good to go.

Unless the 4820K and X79 boards would be cheaper than the xeon and H97...which i highly doubt...do you run multiplre graphics cards or plan to do so?

I do not run multiple GPU's but I do run monitors from the integrated GPU on the CPU, so I need that :/

you'd have to look at core i7-4770, 4770K, 4790 or 4790K for that...i doubt the 3770K would be worth it unless your current motherboard supports it.

My current mobo supports it (Z77 asrock extr4) but that's not really an upgrade.. and here in Belgium a 3770k is more expensive..

3770k is 325€ and a 4790K is 335€ lol. Better get the latter one then and do an upgrade that lasts for years

well the 4770K and 4790K (haswell) are only about 6% faster than ivy bridge i7 (3770K) clock for clock...and the 3770K typicaly overclock better... so i highly doubt it'S worth buying a motherboard for that...and the 3770K IF you are after multi-threaded performance is a worthy upgrade to the 2500K.

looks like your best option for better rendering time and multi-thread performance would be to sell your 2500K online (still worth a huge chunk of change mate BTW...check prices...those still go for around 180$ to 200$ online ATM...good gaming chip like that are still worth pretty penny...you'll find a kid with an i3-2130 begging for that chip that's for sure) and order the 3770K to drop into your motherboard honestly.

My current CPU ran on 4.4 for a long ass time, and I can't get it higher than 4.2 anymore + it's from a prebuilt PC so I don't have the box.

But I saw that the 4790K is a 1150 socket, so the mobo's for that are WAY cheaper than the 2011 socket..

yes they are...up to you to decide wheter it's worth purchasing a new board for the 4790K or just re-use your current board and just drop a new 3770K into it i guess...good luck!

BTW if you sell the 2500k you're not forced to tell the buyer what you've just told me ;) ...just sell it at better price.

Here's what, OP. The 3770K and the 4820K are basically going to perform the same. Jumping from Ivy to haswell isn't exactly a great thing; Ivy is a lot cooler and draws less power above stock, and the IPC jump isn't much at all.

If you REALLY want an upgrade, then the 4930K would be a worthy chip. But don't jump to extreme CPUs to stick with 4-core, 4-thread.

If you're gonna jump from Sandy i5 to haswell i7, you'll notice a solid jump, due to the IPC difference (it's a bit more than 10%) but it's up to you. I would personally wait and see how Broadwell turns out before jumping to Z97 and see how it works. If broadwell is a flop, well you dodge a bullet. Stick with ivy until Skylake. If broadwell is awesome, then great. Up to you which path you want to wait for though.

If you're going X79 however, 4930K please.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Oh, sorry. I read about halfway down. I really suggest he just keep 3770K and grab Skylake or something in the future. It's not enough of a jump to go haswell if he can just grab a CPU (instead of CPU + board).
